It's time to purchase a new ELT, and am looking at EBC's 406AP and E.L.T's 406 with GPS. I am interested in how folks have mounted the antenna's in a F24. Wanting to keep an original look while adding up-to-date safety, I have heard the antenna can be mounted under the fabric humpback. Has anybody made up a ground plane on the steel tube frame? Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Re: ELTs
'I installed the E. L. T. Under the seat and the antenna just behind the baggage compartment. If I remember correctly, there is a semi triangular tubing structure just forward the rudder and and tailwheel bell crank assembly. I purchased a piece of hardened aluminum (for stiffness) and cut a matching ground-plane. I drilled the aluminum where it intersected with the tubing and attached those rubber padded clamps so as to go around the tubing. The antenna was preinstalled on to the aluminum before final mounting.

Mine is on the bottom of the boot cowl. Short antenna leed and is a ground plane.

Re: ELTs
'I just finished my install in my 24. I put a ground plane just forward of the rudder cable junction and below the cables. I utilized part of the frame that the rudder idles arms are mounted to as part of the mount and put 2 adel clamps below the ground plane on the diagonal that runs forward and diagonal to the sea plane mounts. The Antenna was in the center of the ground plane. I ran the cable to the right, then up the vertical tube of the frame then diagonally down and forward to the sea plane mount area. I put the ELT directly under the baggage compartment. The Monitor terminal cable ran up the vertical tube at the sea plane mount, behind the rear window frame, then over the frame, past the electrical junction box. Then I put the enunciator terminal just aft of the fuel gauge. I forgot the manufacturer of the ELT and the model. I put it in a safe place, in the glove box in the airplane. If the photos don't come through, send me another Email address.

Re: ELTs
'I haven't heard from you in a long time. How is you landing gear issues coming? I haven't been getting much done one the airplane. Had the tail wheel tube give up the ghost, and went to Dresser and bought a new tire and tube. Love it. The tire was Chinese and the tube was Polish. I thought I had real issues. When I added air to the tube, the stem was pulled inside the wheel opening. My attitude went to hell real quick. Went to the house and got something really cold to drink (Not the good stuff) and thought about it. It worked, cooled my brain down....NAPA to the rescue. Valve stem extensions. Saw the local store was still open, so 5 minutes, and a couple dollars, and I had 2 3/4" extensions. One to extend the stem to the edge of the opening for the valve stem and the other one in series to get it out to where I can put air into the tube. Once I was done, I removed the second extension and put it into the glove box for future use. I have my ELT installed under and behind the baggage compartment and a simple transceiver. I am going to put a GPS up where the old radio once was.
