PT Brakes
'Well, I’m getting ready to put my PT-23 Brakes back together….should have taken pix!What I am trying to figure out is which way the Retracting Springs, PN A-21-26, figure 35, are supposed to go into the pads. I’m thinking they went with the tips angled up towards the drum and the center towards the axle? It’s not really clear in the T.O. Also any tricks on getting them all in over the expander tube and frames? Should I use the drum to place them all together?Any help would be appreciated! Thanks, PT-23 N64225'

' Well, I should have looked in the Maintenance and Erection Manual, Section 5, Para. 4, Fig. 77. The Springs in the drawings are a bit different with lips on them instead of just a straight leaf. Oh well, that's what came out of her!

'I think you have the same expander tube brake assembly that the F-24's have. The arched portion is against the pads and the tips are close to the brake ring. I think on the assembly process, don't tighten the nuts and bolts on the two halves until you have all the pieces in place. As you assemble it, snug up the nuts & bolts slightly as you get the pieces on that side of the assembly in place. Is your brake drum nice an smooth? Do you have new pads? If so, you will probably need to get use of a lathe and remove some pad material so you can get to the allowable pad/drum tolerance. The number is in the manual. I would look it up, but my eyes are real tired. I have spent most of the afternoon hand stitching a new 40" zipper into my headliner.Bob

In T.O. 01-115GA-2, sec. 5, para. 4, Fig. 77 it looks like the arch is to the bottom of the pad slot close to the tube, and the tips are sweeping up away from the tube, like a smile. As far as turning the pads, I guess that has to be done after assembly? I haven't found the blueprint yet....They sure don't make it simple do they....

'I guess that there is different variations of the manual. Mine has the expander tube assembly in the same section, but fig 58. Fig 59 has the whole wheel assembly. What is odd, the figure has the input brake line on the top side.Well, sounds like you have it under control.

I think on the assembly process, don't tighten the nuts and bolts on the two halves until you have all the pieces in place. As you assemble it, snug up the nuts & bolts slightly as you get the pieces on that side of the assembly in place. Is your brake drum nice an smooth? Do you have new pads? If so, you will probably need to get use of a lathe and remove some pad material so you can get to the allowable pad/drum tolerance. The number is in the manual. I would look it up, but my eyes are real tired. I have spent most of the afternoon hand stitching a new 40" zipper into my headliner.Bob

PT Brakes
'Just got thru rebuilding my master cylinders…..took all of about 30 minutes after removing them from the plane. Thankfully my cylinders were in excellent shape. Pix to follow if they don’t show on this e-mail.
Not sure why there are two different types. The LH one looks like it has a spot welded saddle for the fitting, and a longer end sweated on with an internal stop, possible a cheaper wartime type. RH has a tag on it with 38776 stamped on it….seems much more solid.
