UC61K 10 inch Tail Wheel Tire and Tube

Post by coxargus »

'Folks,

I have a a Variety Aircraft VGC 10 tail wheel hub (thanks to Steve Lawlor) and before I part with 'large bucks' was wanting to check specifically which tube I should use with this tire.

10.00 SC 8 PLY AERO CLASSIC CHANNEL TREAD AIRCRAFT TIRE (as stocked by Desser)
Was planning on the 'Channel tread' to try and reduce the tendency to shimmy and I'm not keen on the hub adapters as I am trying to stay close to original.

I am unsure about the 90* valve as it seems too long  and does not fit well. Also, as Desser say-
"Do not use if you have a fork.  The alternate tube, 10.00 STRAIGHT RUBBER VALVE works in all applications". - but the Variety hub is not, by the look of it, suited to a straight valve - "Catch 22"!

Any/all comments/experiences on which combination of tire and tube work best, polite or otherwise, will be most welcome.

Thanks in advance

Frank'

The 90 degree metal stem won't work. You have to use the straight rubber stem and live with pushing it over and putting the cover plate over it.

I just replaced mine a month or so back and it seemed a little shorter than the previous tube stem and fit better. On the previous one and on my other PT it would bow the cover plate out.

I recommend having a spare tube handy.

The reason for my last replacement was a failed valve stem. Admittedly well over 10 years old, but I suspect the extra stress of pushing it over can't be good for it.

FYI, Desser took my return of the 90 degree metal stem tube without any issues. A friend ordered it for me when he was ordering one for his Stearman, which uses the 90 degree. Sent via BlackBerry by AT&TFrom: "coxs.gorrel@virgin.net [fairchildclub]"

'I use a wheelbarrow inter-tube on my standard 10" tire on my 24.  Purchased at a local tire store. The stem alignment leaves something to be desired.  This could be my installing it!  Tried several times to get to line up, but stem rests against one side of the wheel which makes checking pressure and inflating a bit of a challenge.  Also, the stem is a bit too long to allow for installing the small section of the dust cover over it.Roger StarrNC77630

'Frank,
I use the straight stem tube from Desser  in my Variety wheel. It's a little tough to deal with, but I use a valve stem extender of about 3 inches that I screw onto the tube for check and fill. I keep a spare extender in my tool bag for when I'm out flying about.   I'm running about 60# nitrogen. It's impossible to get a cap on the stem, but the cover does well to keep the dirt out.
Hope this helps,
Steve Lawlor'

'Thanks to all for your input – The ‘tipped over straight valve’ seems to be the best compromise – I’ll go that way and maybe pass on the wheelbarrow tube – I don’t think the powers that be would be too happy with that one!

Folks,

Frank

' I just got done installing a 10SC tube & tire on a Variety VG-10 10" hub for my PT-26 project.  The tube is the Polish one with the 90 degree metal valve stem.  After multiple trials this is what I found.

1.  I was able to install the with the stem at the original 90 degree position, with some pluses and minuses.  On the minus side I could not install the cover plate as the valve stem sticks out too far, but but on the plus side the tire can easily be filled and pressure checked.
2.  The stem angle can be changed by loosening the lock nut.
3.  I repositioned the the stem about 30 degrees ccw, and slightly relieved the main part of the hub where the stem passes through to accommodate the angle.
4.  Everything assembled easily, with the stem below the level of the cover plate.  To fill and check pressure I had to install a valve stem extension, available for a buck everywhere.  If you use a plastic extension, I suggest cutting off the unthreaded lead-in portion of the extension, which makes it easier to install & remove.  I had to pry the stem back a bit with a small screwdriver to get it on.

QUESTION:  What is everyone doing for tailwheel seals?  I couldn't find a seal with a 7/8" ID, so I had to make 15/16" spacers to fit the seal I could find with the correct OD and width.

'Thanks Bill.  I stand corrected, it does look like you can make the metal stem work.  It sure didn't appear that way when I tried it on my spare tailwheel, but I must admit I didn't make a lot of effort as I knew the tailwheel on the airplane was different and had the rubber stem tube that I knew would work.  Not sure if the spare I tried it on is a variety tailwheel or not.  I'll check.

I have in my hangar a complete tailwheel strut, fork, wheel, and tire assembly. We pulled it off a Waco RNF project. Went back to the Waco setup. I believe it is a 1937 vintage. Tailwheel is a Varitety Aircraft P/N 25272, S/N A925. Wheel width is 4.5 inches outside to outside. Casting on Fork is 61370. The tire is a Flat Rib type. Brand new with tube. Still has the sticker on it.  I have some pics of the strut and wheel. I know it it not a 1940 and newer. I have it listed for $450.00 on Barnstormers as a complete unit. Will let it go for a big discount to the FC club members. Send me an email for pics
