What alloy - Ranger Cam shaft housing?

Post by Frank »

'Please could a Ranger expert say what alloy the cam shaft housing and cover are made from - I am in a debate as to whether they are aluminum or magnesium alloy. Personally I'm gunning for aluminum - and there is no bet on this one !!

Thanks

'Magnesium.  When aluminum corrodes, it turns into a white powder.  When magnesium corrodes, it turns black.

'Not true Mike, Mag produces a white powder when it corrodes, it turns black when it is treated with Magnadyne, for corrosion prevention.

How to tell the difference between MAG and ALU.

Sand a clean spot on the casting, ( very small spot) touch the clean spot with Alodine. if it turns black quickly it is MAG, if it produces and coffee looking stain it is aluminum. as described in the directions for use a " Golden hue "

Alodine is 6% chromic acid and water solution, with a neutral PH factor.
Magnadyne is a 2% chromic acid and

'Hi Jack,

I have 6 sets on NOS mains and rod bearings.

When rebuilding Ranger Engines, I use re-poured bearings and line bore the
case to fin crankshaft.
