Re: Stromberg NA-R4B Carburetor
'John, I don?t have much to report, but I may have spoken to soon. After
working on the carb and getting the accelerator pump screwed back in, it
appeared as the pumping action was in the last ¼ inch of movement. So when
I tried to start the engine and had all the trouble I changed my priming
procedure on the throttle action to pumping it only the last third of travel
near full throttle. This was prompted by wanting to put as little stress on
my repaired little fork as possible.
This morning before taking the carb input apart, I decided to try an engine
start using my old procedure. That is pumping the wobble pump to obtain
steady pressure and then rapidly pumping the throttle five full times using
the full throw of the throttle leaver as described in the operation manual.
This time the engine started normally. I cannot say this is due to being
started only one day after a previous run, or if this procedure is required
for the accelerator pump to pick up the fuel and spray it into the throat.
I was also waiting to see if I could get some info on the carb. I rcvd that
from Jamie Treat today.
I am hoping that the accelerator pump is actually working and at first I was
not sure and thought it was not working. At this point, I am going to use
my old priming and starting procedure and see if it continues to work
normally.
I will continue to keep you posted on how it is operating. Also, Mike Kelly
told me that Terry Norris with Aircraft Systems in Rockford. IL overhauls
these carbs. I have used them for years on Mags, Gens, Starters and
Alternators with excellent results. I am glad to know they do carbs as well
because I have faith in them.
Hopefully I got the carb and accelerator pump properly installed and it is
actually working ok after all.
Thanks for your input, patience and help. I will stay in touch and keep you
informed.
You and Dottie have a Happy New Year.
