tailwheel shimmy

Post by Jeffrey Whitesell »

'Hello Fairchild enthusiasts

I'm new to the group---Just started teaching in a PT-19. Got a little tailwheel shimmy that shows up intermittently on the landing rollout....Any suggestions?

'Hello Jeff
If you search the previous chats on this site your gonna find quite a few previous chats regarding this subject. It's been an issue/topic of conversation for the PT and F24's for years.
There is a lot of wisdom and BS in the conversations, but what works for one may not work for another. For my own I found I needed new keys in my strut and re-shimed the trailing link collar. No more issues.
Good luck

'I concur. Note that many PTs have fully splined shafts vs the 2 keys
mentioned by Jim found in a lot of F-24s.

'Land slower and have the tailwheel centered when lowering. Check to see if
the tailwheel and the rudder are pointing in the same direction.

Then rely to old post of this group dealing with shimmy and tailwheel arrangement end play!
