Brake Fluid

'How do I tell what kind of brake fluid that I have in my system? I
have looked back in the logs, but no help. I heard Jamie say that he
tasted the fluids. How does that work? Thanks.'

'I am involved with the Iowa Aviation Heritage Museum in Ankeny, Iowa.
We are restoring a Pt19 to flying condition. We are currently working
on the brake system and I read in the Maintenance Manual that you are
suppose to use Mineral Oil or Lockhead Oil in the Brake system. I see
that someone wrote recently that they use DOT 5 fluid. Is this okay?
Where can I get the correct fluid and where can I purchase new master
cylinder seals and brake expander diaphrams from. We have one that I
would not be afraid to reuse and another that I would rather replace.

'I've used DOT 5 with no problems. Others have said the same regarding
5606, but some have noted incompatibility of 5606 with the bladders.
In any case be sure to flush the system completely to insure you don't
have a mix of fluids.

Fresno Airparts has expander tubes.

I use DOT 5 in the brakes of my 24W-41.  Also use the same fluid in my landing gear oleo struts.

'Buell,  Yes you  can use Dot 5. If you do, mark it in the log, highlight in yellow. Mark near the masters, cover is good place. Do the same for the struts. You do not want to mix Dot 3 or 5606. Hello Buell,

The three fluids are very different and are not compatible with each other. Their systems are not cleaned and flushed with the same chemicals/fluids. I would suggest you do a little investigating on the traits and properties of each fluid type and make your own educated decision on which to use. Keep in mind that commonality is often the safest choice.
