Brake Fluid
'I am involved with the Iowa Aviation Heritage Museum in Ankeny, Iowa.
We are restoring a Pt19 to flying condition. We are currently working
on the brake system and I read in the Maintenance Manual that you are
suppose to use Mineral Oil or Lockhead Oil in the Brake system. I see
that someone wrote recently that they use DOT 5 fluid. Is this okay?
Where can I get the correct fluid and where can I purchase new master
cylinder seals and brake expander diaphrams from. We have one that I
would not be afraid to reuse and another that I would rather replace.
You can see some of our progress at our website
www.iowaaviationheritagemuseum.web.com
Thank you for your help.

'I've used DOT 5 with no problems. Others have said the same regarding
5606, but some have noted incompatibility of 5606 with the bladders.
In any case be sure to flush the system completely to insure you don't
have a mix of fluids.
Fresno Airparts has expander tubes.

'#ygrps-yiv-1610232778 p {margin:0;} Finally re-building the master cylinders on my 1946 F24. I believe they are the same as for a 1937 Plymouth. I found a note in my records to use Dot 5 fluid--can someone let me know if this is correct and what would be best to clean the cylinder bore and flush the lines. Thanks. Buell Powell-1946 F24R

I use DOT 5 in the brakes of my 24W-41. Also use the same fluid in my landing gear oleo struts.

Hello Buell,
The three fluids are very different and are not compatible with each other. Their systems are not cleaned and flushed with the same chemicals/fluids. I would suggest you do a little investigating on the traits and properties of each fluid type and make your own educated decision on which to use. Keep in mind that commonality is often the safest choice.

Subject: [fairchildclub] RE: Brake Fluid Hello Buell, The three fluids are very different and are not compatible with each other. Their systems are not cleaned and flushed with the same chemicals/fluids. I would suggest you do a little investigating on the traits and properties of each fluid type and make your own educated decision on which to use. Keep in mind that commonality is often the safest choice. Review these sites before making a final choice:Different Types Of Brake FluidDifference Between Dot3 and Dot4 Brake Fluid | Difference BetweenBrake_Fluid_Tech.pdf (application/pdf Object)DOT 3, DOT 4, and DOT 5 « Jim’s GarageBrake Fluid Facts Wes KIA in Wisconsin
