PT-19 fuel tank

Post by robert hensarling »

'Is there a fix for a tiny pin-hole leak in a fuel tank? If not, is a replacement tank available anywhere? This a right side tank.
Thanks

'A temp fix is to rub bar soap into the pinhole. Soap is insoluble in
gasoline. A more permanent fix is to clean well and use a glob of JB Weld.
If the tank is tin plate or steel, solder it shut. If it is aluminum, drain,
purge with nitrogen or other non-flammable gas and weld it. DO NOT
pressurize with the gas.

Thanks Cy. I'll have it soldered. I'm wondering if there's also a "slosh"
material to use inside the tank while it's removed from the aircraft, just
in case there may be another area that may be thin?

'Robert,

Beware of sloshing compounds, they are not a perm fix. Weld or Solder if you can. Just be careful, do as Cy stated. I have welded many tanks over the years.

'I'd stay away from "sloshes" as even Piper has problems with them. They peal
off. They plug up screens, etc. They are bad news.

'Bob,

I have many PT fuel tanks if you cannot fix it I can supply the replacement.
Do you have the type of fuel guages that screw into the tank or the type
that and held in by screws arround the flange?

That's good to know John, many thanks! My tank has the flange, and the
guage is held in place with a series of screws. Are you tanks NOS? Do you
have an idea of pricing just in case?
Thanks!
