Mr Albert,
I know you have no intentions of harming any one, but your computer
is contaminated with the BADTRAN32 virus.
How do I know? because I recieved it from your computer, I deleted
it and no harm occured here. It is rampid all across the internet, an
many folks have it with out their knowledge.
Please get your computer de bugged
AND NEVER OPEN ATTACHMENTS
I feel that If a joke or attachment is good enought to send, it is
good enough to clean up and place within the body of the e-mail by
doing a "insert"
My mama could send the secret of eternal life in an attachment, And I
would never see it.
There is not an attachment worth crashing this computer, I will not
open them. All virus scanners need to be updated, but they all get
updated after the virus attack, My method is fool proof.
DON'T CLICK.'

There are some new, virulent worms and viruses now loose on the internet.
Walter Alberts last posting is
almost certainly from one. Since the fairchild list strips off attachments,
the virus will not propagate to
other members via the email list, however, if you recieve an email that
seems odd directly from Walter (or
anyone else, for that matter) DO NOT OPEN THE ATTACHMENTS. (Bob Waldren's
computer sent out a batch of
contaminated emails yesterday as well).

This is a good reminder that anti-virus software is almost essential for PC
internet users. Be sure to keep
your virus definition files up-to-date by visiting your vendor's web site
and downloading the current files.

Also, if you use Microsoft Explorer or Outlook Express, be sure you have
applied the latest security patches
(downloadable from Microsoft support).

Walter,

You (actually, your computer) sent the following message to the
fairchildclub mailing list. There are several
microsoft viruses and worms that send random infected documents from an
infected computer to everyone in the
local email address book (and other sources).

You need to get up to date virus protection / removal software and treat
your computer asap; some of these
worms can do real damage to your files.

'Walt,

You are not listening to the guys. You computer was infected. The virus then sends out an email to everyone in your email address book trying to give them the virus. You have had no knowledge of it. That is the way the virus works.

I also received the emails with attachments from your computer. You need to get a current virus scan and it will solve the problem. No one is accusing you of anything except have a virus.

Hope this helps.

'Walter,

Viruses are very clever about obtaining email addresses. They can take them
from your stored emails, your address book, or even from web pages that have
been cached by your computer (caching happens automatically; most of the web
sites you have recently visited are still in your cache folder).

You can have the latest version of McAfee installed and still not be protected
from viruses that have emerged since your software released. The BadTrans virus
has only been in the scanners for about a week. You can update your McAfee for
free by going to:

http://download.mcafee.com/updates/updates.asp?

Download that file and scan with the latest virus data and I think you'll
resolve this problem. If a scan doesn't show a problem, we will really have
something to scratch our heads over.

Remember, besides sending emails of your documents, viruses can create big
troubles for your computer itself. Get the update, run the scan, and let us
know how it came out.

'Walter:

Judging by your replies, I'd guess that you don't know very much about computers,
and do not realize that a computer virus or worm sends email by itself, without you
even knowing about it.

Your denial of the facts changes nothing.

Please find a computer saavy friend to help you cleanup your PC.

LIST MEMBERS

There are some new, virulent worms and viruses now loose on the internet.
Walter Alberts last posting is
almost certainly from one. Since the fairchild list strips off attachments,
the virus will not propagate to
other members via the email list, however, if you recieve an email that
seems odd directly from Walter (or
anyone else, for that matter) DO NOT OPEN THE ATTACHMENTS. (Bob Waldren's
computer sent out a batch of
contaminated emails yesterday as well).

This is a good reminder that anti-virus software is almost essential for PC
internet users. Be sure to keep
your virus definition files up-to-date by visiting your vendor's web site
and downloading the current files.

Also, if you use Microsoft Explorer or Outlook Express, be sure you have
applied the latest security patches
(downloadable from Microsoft support).

Walter,

You (actually, your computer) sent the following message to the
fairchildclub mailing list. There are several
microsoft viruses and worms that send random infected documents from an
infected computer to everyone in the
local email address book (and other sources).

You need to get up to date virus protection / removal software and treat
your computer asap; some of these
worms can do real damage to your files.

'Walter:

What does your new McAfee 6.0 say when you tell it to scan your computer for viruses?
o Click on 'Scan for Viruses Now', in the 'Quick Jump' box.
o Click on 'Local Disk (C:)
o Click on 'Scan' box on bottom right corner of screen

You've verified that it is configured to scan email for viruses? To check this with 6.0:
o Click on 'Pick a Task' (bottom left corner of window).
o Click on 'Change my VirusScan settings'
o Click on 'Configure Vshield background scanning'

Then, ensure that all boxes are checked, particularly:
o Enable System Scanning
o Enable Microsoft Outlook E-mail scanning
o Enable Download & E-mail scanning

Have you told McAfee to update itself from the McAfee website? The most up to date virus data
file for McAfee is currently virus data version 4173. You can tell McAfee 6.0 to update itself via
the 'Check for a VirusScan Update' selection in the 'Quick Jump' menu.

Have you read email on more than one computer? Maybe it is one of your other computers
which is infected?
