!!VIRUS WARNING!!

There are some new, virulent worms and viruses now loose on the internet. Walter Alberts last posting is
almost certainly from one. Since the fairchild list strips off attachments, the virus will not propagate to
other members via the email list, however, if you recieve an email that seems odd directly from Walter (or
anyone else, for that matter) DO NOT OPEN THE ATTACHMENTS. (Bob Waldren's computer sent out a batch of
contaminated emails yesterday as well).

This is a good reminder that anti-virus software is almost essential for PC internet users. Be sure to keep
your virus definition files up-to-date by visiting your vendor's web site and downloading the current files.

Also, if you use Microsoft Explorer or Outlook Express, be sure you have applied the latest security patches
(downloadable from Microsoft support).

Walter,

microsoft viruses and worms that send random infected documents from an infected computer to everyone in the
local email address book (and other sources).

You need to get up to date virus protection / removal software and treat your computer asap; some of these
worms can do real damage to your files.

'Walt,

I just got a message from you titled "we are now living" with an attachment "appeasment.bat" -- that's the probable virus. I deleted it...fast.

It reads like strong political commentary about Clinton vs. Bush, but any file with a .bat, .exe, .vbs extension is a BAD DEAL.

Y'all don't open it.

'Walt,
I was informed by my ISP that there are many viruses out there lately
that especially like the Microsoft Outlook email program and may have
infected your computer and the virus sends out emails with the virus
attached AUTOMATICALLY to recipients in your address book. Please
understand that I am accusing you of nothing...just pointing out the
fact that you or anyone else may not even be aware their email program
is forwarding viruses. If you don't have any virus protection software,
I suggest you get one such as Norton Antivirus and keep up with the
virus definition updates and scan your computer at LEAST weekly,
preferably daily.

Here is the note my email provider sent me earlier this week regarding
recent viruses:

"As you may have heard, a new variant of the Badtrans virus has been
released and is posing a particularly serious threat to home users.

As with similar e-mail viruses, Badtrans exploits Microsoft Outlook and
attempts to propagate itself by replying to unread e-mail messages on
clients' computers.

This virus is more than a nuisance. If the attachment is opened, it
will
install a small program known as a Trojan. Once running, the Trojan
attempts to mail the victim's IP Address to the author. Once this
information is obtained, the author can connect to the infected system
via
the Internet and steal personal information such as usernames, and
passwords. In addition, the Trojan also contains a keylogger program
which
is capable of capturing other vital information such as credit card and
bank account numbers and passwords.

Unfortunately, this is yet another example of the recent increase we
have
seen in viruses circulating around the internet.

Our Technical Support center has noticed an increase of users with
systems
infected with both e-mail based and other system effecting viruses.

In order to protect your own system, and ensure that our network is as
free from viruses as possible, we have published additional information
that you can use to learn how internet viruses work, how to detect them,
how to protect your computer from them and how to remedy one that has
already infected your computer."

'Walter:

When your PC gets infected with some viruses and worms, it sends email to other
people by itself, typically, using your address book. You probably would not know
that it is happening, until other people tell you about it...

I've also received virus email from your PC, and attempted to send you a private
email to you, alerting you about it. Did you ever receive it?

'Walter:

Most likely, your address book also contains the Fairchild club.

I would assume that you are not using a virus protection software package,
or if you are, that you have not been keeping its virus data base updated.
Also, make sure that it is configured to scan email. Older versions of McAfee,
for example, did not scan email for viruses by default, which seems silly.

I've included the message that I previously attempted to send to you about a
virus generated email which I received from what appears to be your PC. It
appears to be from the I-Worm.Hybris.b or W32/Hybris.gen@MM
email virus, judging by the "midgets.scr" enclosure attached to the email from
your PC.

If you are a technically saavy PC user, please see the following web sites for
help removing this email virus from your computer:

http://vil.mcafee.com/dispVirus.asp?virus_k=98873&
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w95.hybris.gen.html

Walter:

Your PC appears to be infected with a Virus, because it sent me
the following email. I've included the full email headers below,
and it came from your machine.

You might want to install McAfee or Norton Anti Virus software,
and use it to clean up your machine.

I'm looking forward to seeing the pictures of your Fairchild,
when they arrive.

Thank you very much,
Chris Shaker

'Please note that some of the more recent email viruses and worms can send
out your private documents from your PC to the email addresses that it
finds on your PC.

I helped a couple of my friends remove email viruses from their PCs in the past
month.

One of them found out that his PC was infected when a friend forwarded
virus generated email back to him. That email contained a private legal
document from his PC.
