Re: Jasco Alternators and the Ranger Engine

Post by twing4@juno.com »

'I agree with Mike, a quick check of STC list at the FAA web site
shows no STC held by Skytronics involving the Ranger engine,
Fairchild, or Grumman Widgeon. The Grumman mentioned is a G164(AG CAT)
a widgeon is a G44.Jasco own site listed in JSTreat's reply concur
with the FAA 's database. Skytronics holds 13 STC's, none of which
mention The 24 or Ranger.
This doesn't mean that you can't do it. You'll just have to get your
alteration(337) approved by your FSDO BEFORE you begin. This is where
the Administrator fills out block 3 on the 337. To help get the
Administrator to approve your data to perform your alteration you may
show them a previously approved 337 of someone else's, but this is
not ironclad. If they don't want to approve it they won't and you
can't. Further engineering data and or more sophisticated data may be
required to sway the Administrator. An STC avoids this as it is
already approved data as long as the installing agency(mechanic)
follows the the STC. A 337 still has to be executed but block 3 is
left empty and the alteration can be performed and ship returned to
service by a current I.A. without any colaboration with the FAA other
than submitting the completed 337.'

'Walt,

I have at least two FAA 337 for the 24R46 and about 4 for the Warner models.
None of them talk about the ducting for cooling. Send me what you have, will
not make this CD Rom but will have it scanned and available for send out via
email. Will put it on the next version of the CD Rom.

'Jamie,

There is a ducting requirement on the Jasco directions that says
something along the line of "no warranty if you don't install ducting."
I installed a tube from the back of the cooling plenum on the Ranger to
the alternator. As there is little flow, the cooling seems fine on the
engine. I put in multiple CHTs and they all are cool.

'A 2 inch scat hose from the back vertical wall of the air box to the intake
vent of the alternator works just fine. Do not try to clock the rear cover
vent inlet as the air blast goes directly to diodes.

Re: Jasco Alternators and the Ranger Engine

Post by Thekortas@aol.com »

'O.K. Here's another two cents in the "for what its worth" column. I too installed the Jasco conversion in my F24R46A and it has been one of the best things that I have done to that airplane. There is NO STC for the installation on a Ranger in a Fairchild. But, with all the 337's that are out there for similar previous installations, I had no problem getting mine approved. The question (debate) seems to be coming up over whether you "must" or you "should" install the cooling duct. All the folks involved with my installation , including me, noted that the cooling duct installation was more than just something that would void the warrantee if you didn't do it. In fact, the 337's that I have seen, make reference to the installation conforming to the Jasco paperwork and that drawing sure seems to be part of the paperwork I received from Jasco. I did not go off of the cooling box for air because I did not want to diminish the air flow one bit over the cylinders. Nor did I go off of the rear wall of the bo
x that boxes out the ehaust system. I actually installed a small scoop outside on the bottom cowl and ran scat tube up to the alternator. Slick little installation that has worked flawlessly thus far. Perhaps I'll try to take some photos and send them to the club for inclusion in one of the newsletters if anyone is interested.
Well, like I said, just another two cents worth. Hi! to everyone. Nice to see everyone on the discussion board now and again.
Regards,
Steve Korta'
