GPS Antenna Mounting

Post by bbarrett »

On the Yahoo list, there was a question about mounting the GPS antenna for a GDL82 setup. I thought I'd post what I did, which wasn't too much effort. I created a mount point behind the rear spar carry through out of 1/4" plywood, with a copper sheet glued to the top to act as a ground plane. There is also a copper sheet on the bottom, with sheet through the holes to bond everything together. You'll need copper sheet with conductive adhesive for that to work (which, yes, you can find). Slightly hidden in the picture is a grounding wire attached to one of the mounting screws and then to airframe ground. The only tricky part was feeding the antenna wire down the front door frame, then follow the fuel lines to behind the panel, where I mounted the GDL82. Thus far, it's worked well and the GDL82 hasn't reported any signal issues.
