Pt 26 generator

Post by David Stout »

'Generator either not charging or charging very little, I assume it is either the voltage regulator or the generator itself. Having never worked on one, my question is, is there anything in particular I should look for or look out for?
By the way, we resolved the brake issue on this airplane. I did find a set of NOS expander tubes, new brake blocks. But the real problem was the brake drums...something I found in an old manual mentioned this. I had .030 clearance on one wheel and .045 on the other. Ended up shim, inn up the new blocks. Brakes now work as intended.

Thanks for any help on the generator

Here is a quick n dirty troubleshooting guide for you.  Generators have become a lost art, but these guys can still fix most of your components. I have been using their stuff for close to 40 years and they have always done right by me.

' As a guess, since I am just about an old as your generator.  If everything else appears good, "Flashing the field could correct your problem."  What it will do is re-polarize the field.  The motor should not be running.  It is a matter of taking a 12 Volt lead that is connected to the battery and quickly brush it across the Field terminal on the generator.   I say quickly because if you do it slowly, the lead and terminal could weld together.  Once or twice is usually OK.  Probably any more and you would be wasting your time.  On the regulator, I believe it is the center coil/contact set, (is connected to the field) it would be rapidly opening and closing while the engine is running,  I believe that there is an adjustment on it that will change the spring tension, which will alter the voltage output of the generator.   I would warn you, don't adjust the last coil/contact.  It sets the cut off level for the generator.  With out having a variable load bank to set it, you run the risk of burning out the generator.  Been there, done that.Don't use anything like a regular file to clean the contacts.  If possible, maybe 1000 or greater sand paper may be ok.

Re: Pt 26 generator

Post by David Stout »

'Bob, thank you for your reply! I am hoping flashing the field or polarizing will solve the problem. I read somewhere that if a generator sits along time without being used the field windings will loose their magnetism, a quick touch from the positive side of the battery to the armature terminal will polarize . This generator, and airplane for that matter, sat a long time...about 11 or 12 years so maybe that’s the problem. I remember as a kid , polarizing the generator on my old ford but I always did it with the engine running.
I will let you know how I make out, it will be Saturday before I give it a shot.
Thank you

Dave

As a guess, since I am just about an old as your generator.

Here is a quick n dirty troubleshooting guide for you.  Generators have become a lost art, but these guys can still fix most of your components. I have been using their stuff for close to 40 years and they have always done right by me.

' I hope that you could find someone that is older than I who could verify some or all that I said in the previous msg.   Maybe someday I can find a new owner for the generator (Rebuilt) that I bought for a 180 HP Franklin.  I think the mounting flange is the same as yours, but the shaft if different. (25 Amp).  I have another that worked  on a Warner 165, better than nothing at 17 Amp rating.  I will check the type of shaft.  They aren't even good for boat anchors, to light.  Maybe only worth the freight to ship them somewhere.
