Spruce Spar Material
'Does anyone in the club have a Spruce spar supplier they've delt with recently, besides Aircraft Spruce and wicks? One of our builders wants spar material for his F-24 and was told they can't supply pieces that large.

'Depending on how big a spar you need, I suggest lamination as the way to make up larger sized pieces. It is more work but results in a superior product.
For large material I've had to buy out of private stashes. Wicks & Spruce have set up exclusivity agreements that have locked out private buyers from the yards in Washington state that used to sell direct. I'm told there is a supplier in Elma that will still sell direct but I have no personal experience there.

Large stock is getting rare. It would be new old stock if you find.
Steen Aero Lab builds their own laminate spars for the same reason.

Large stock is getting rare. It would be new old stock if you find.
Steen Aero Lab builds their own laminate spars for the same reason.

'Grain density is only one of many factors although obviously important as Jamie points out. People should consult ANC-19 for guidance on grading.
I have more trouble finding suitable edge grained, non-spiraled, and limited knot hole material for large pieces. This is where splicing & laminating can come in handy since you get more opportunities to use good material and work around poor quality material that shows up as variation in a longish raw board.
While Spruce is expensive and limited in the sizes they can supply, in my experience they generally do a good job on grading and supplying decent quality pieces for spar-sized material. The material they supply for capstrip sized pieces is not as uniform but I'll accept some throwaway there. It isn't worth my time to make capstrip when it can be bought cheaply.

'From what I am reading, the availability of big pieces of spruce is definitely getting harder. You might go to the North West and buy yourself a whole tree, then sell what you don't use.
I got my spars (4 each) 30 years ago. Even then they were laminated. 2 layers, then they were milled down. Nothing very new. I have 2 spars from a UC-61 and they were at least 6 layers thick before milling. I never have looked to see how many splices there may be length wise.
I don't even want to think about the cost for them at today's prices.
I am looking forward to covering wings and tail this summer.
