'Hi guys
I have been having problems hot starting my ranger engine (200hp)
it ushally occurs after I have left the a/c for a hour or so?
what am I doing wrong?

'If it starts easy when cold, I would check coils in the mags.

If your airplane has 60 year old mags that have never been serviced, you should look into Fresno Air Parts rebuilts (for $425.00 each). Great mags and will eliminate most problems. I think they sell new coils for $100.00.
Coils fail when they get old or when they get hot. If you have ever flown an airplane when BOTH coils fail in flight, you will appreciate the comfortable feeling of flying with new coils.

'It is possible that the Carb was never overhauled since new. After an overhaul on carb we never had any problems starting.

'I had this exact problem a number of years ago. While I can't give you
the exact reasons, after we changed out the carb I never had the
problem again.

'I would clean the plugs first. Then check the internal resistance of the center electrode of each plug. Should be 4000 ohms or less.

It can be several issues.
The first thing is that the heat is causing vapor
look in the fuel lines. It should start on the
primer and then quit. Insulation on the fuel line
may help.
Second: you are not priming enough. Soak it and
then start it with the fuel mixture in lean and
throttle in max.. A.s.a. it fires push to rich and
pull to idle.
Be aware of possible carb fire.
Third. Your coils in the mags are old and they
normally get sensitive to heat. As long you run
the engine, temperatures may stay at a low level
but when you cut it off, the heat will spread and
weaken them.
