Flight of N4263S ....

Post by Matt & Patty »

'I am happy to report that N4263S took to the skies again on Saturday, January 15th. I have owned her for just over two years and have spent that entire time getting her airworthy again. The A/C logs show her last flight being in 1994. The takeoff and climb performance with the Jake 755B2 is impressive to say the least. I am totally new to the 24 and I have to say, "What a great flying airplane". I'll try to get some photos posted in the next few days.

'Bob,
I weighed the plane because I didn't trust the old W&B data.... good thing I did. The empty CG came out at 14.1 inches and the forward limit is 16.3. Adding pilots and fuel doesn't move it back significantly. It would take around 100lbs under the rear seat and in the bag bin to get the CG within. I thought about all of the options and ended up putting lead in the tail to get the empty CG to 16.1. With an FAA 170lb pilot on board it is at 16.4 and I don't have to put any ballast under the seat or in the bin to be legal. Useful load is a joke using the TCDS gross weight. Even at the forward limit she flies really well. Stalls are a non-event. On final, with full up trim and the power all the way back she still wants to do 80. I am going to bias the trim to the up side a few degrees and see what that does. With a person in the back or some baggage it would probably be fine.
It's amazes me that the previous owners flew this plane for years with the CG way forward ... must have flown OK, but I was not comfortable with it.
The Jake really makes this plane come alive. I flew a 200hp Ranger model and it was very sluggish by comparison. The Jake with CS prop is heavy and kills the useful load of the airplane but if your willing to fly at the UC-61 GW or you just want a spirited two seater... and you can take the ribbing from the purists... I highly recomend it.

'The last set I had made was through Savage Magneto in Oakland, CA. Any
Skytronics distributor should be able to make up a set for you. They will
need your looms to do it. The standard Aerolite wires are blue, but I
believe you can still get black(that's what Savage used on mine) if that's
important to you.
