PT-19 Brakes
'I have been working on the brakes of my PT-19 and found one master cylinder
with a slight leak. It has Goodyear 1" No. 511732 Master Cylinders. I need
a source for the O-ring. It looks like a 3/16 thick, 5/8 I.D. and 1" O.D.
O-ring. Can anyone offer help in finding a source for this size O-ring.
Also, the Master Cylinder calls for a Castor Oil Base Fluid, AC3586. What
type of fluid are you using? The previous owner's shop told me they were
using Auto DOT 3 Brake Fluid in the brakes and 5606 in the landing gear
shock struts.
Thanks,
Jack

Re: PT-19 Brakes
'Michael, thank you very much for your response. According to my Army
Service Manual for the PT-19, a 1" Goodyear Brake Cylinder is used. The
diagram looks exactly like my Goodyear cylinders.
What is the advantage in the DOT 5 over the DOT 3 Brake Fluid? I have used
Preston DOT 3 that is stated to also be synthetic.
I have found a source for the O-Ring seals, but not the Front Piston Cup
Seal. Fortunately my cup seals seem to be in good shape.
McMaster-Carr at www.mcmaster.com has a large
selection of various size O-rings.
I would appreciate any and all additional info to help on brake maintenance.

Since I visited with you a NAPA Kit # UP 190 has been recommended for a

Michael, thank you very much for your response.
McMaster-Carr at www.mcmaster. com has a large
selection of various size O-rings.
I would appreciate any and all additional info to help on brake maintenance.
Thanks,

You must have a different Master cylinder than what we have because ours
uses a Ford F100 Wheel Cylinder Seal in it. We use DOT 5 Fluid as it will
work both with our Master Cylinder Seal and the original Hayes Expander
Tubes for the wheels with out reacting to both. DOT 5 is a Synthetic Fluid.

I have been working on the brakes of my PT-19 and found one master cylinder
with a slight leak.

I did not get back to my email again until tonight. The responses you got
from these other people are correct. We also are using the DOT 5 in our
struts but 5606 Hydraulic Fluid would work fine. By keeping everything in
the DOT 5 we do not have any miscommunication on what is used where. If you
need the cup seals the Ford F100 early larger wheel cylinder seals work
perfectly. I think I have the part number out at the airport and I will
post it for you. This is something I learned from from talking to people in
this Chat Room. They are very knowledgeable and helpful.

Re: PT-19 Brakes
'Jack,
What I found was it fit's a 1964 Ford F-150 listed for Wagner Bendix Wheel Cylinder Repair Kit MFG # 5355. We installed these seals in both of our Master Cylinders and they are working perfectly. We bought the kit at Advanced Auto Supply. These seals are larger than most of the later vehicle drum brake wheel kits. I believe they are 1.25 diameter if I recall correctly. That is why I had to look for a specific make and model to find the correct size. Hope everything goes well for you.
