Leaking strut

Post by John Ellis »

'Good Evening

Does anyone know where to find how much oil should be in the struts of PT-19.

The plane is 125 miles from my shop with a strut leaking. I had them remove the cover and check the oil level on the dip stick.

Called back saying it was about half way up on the stick.

Thinking this may be problem, have never had one leak before.

Your help is appreciated,

John

'Can you gauge it against the other strut that isn't leaking for a quick fix?

'Hello John,
There should be a line scribed on the dipstick to show you a full indication. As far as the leak goes, my leak turned out to be from the gasket (or lack thereof) under the dipstick nut. It turned out when I landed, some fluid would push out the top and then run down the body of the strut.

I don't know where your leak is but it may be worth a quick look.
