Re: Ranger Overhaul cost??
'Amen John. Whenever weight is added to the airframe, it's there for
ALL operations, it cannot be managed like fuel. A similar scenario is
the Citabria. New metal spar wings add 100lbs to the gross but add 70-
80lbs to the empty. This is 75lbs that plane has to lug aroung from
now on...it'll never be the same. A W670 conversion would have to add
75lbs minimum and more likely 150(I really can't see how it could be
hung on there for less than a 175lb gain, unless all electric is
chucked. Now, what about exhaust? A Stearman system all patched up
might be scrounged up for $1500. Then there is the issue of
propeller. All Continental props are $5K min except wood. Now, the
Air Corp hub costs $600-1000. The nuts alone are $20ea X 8 (an 8808
Ranger hub on Ebay went for $300 a couple days ago)......that $12,000
Ranger is looking good about now, not to mention getting approval.
Then there's those little 3/8 fuel lines- you sure you want to run
that size 7 Stromberg on one 3/8" fuel line( one tank at a time
remember)?

Continental STC for F24
'Hey guys:
The Continental has been on this airplane since 1973; flies great and fuel
management is similar to the Ranger. However; an overhaul is $13,500 at
present and a wood prop aprox $2500. Yes; there us some additional weight
but entire manageable. With minimum electrics and radio installed, it is
easily manageable, and the seaplane version was approved for 200# more GTOW
than the land plane version (?) - who knows why?
The Continental is common in that almost any A & P worth their salt
can work on them anywhere in the US. PARTS are plentiful and one does not
have to hunt for the good deals or try to find parts. Warners are an
entirely different story as Paul Harvey says: a rebuild on them is almost
$20k and TBO is 400 hours unless you can get creative and get some DER, DAR,
FSDO, FIDO, MIDO or FAA Cert office to buy off on some other number and that
IS difficult to say the least. How often would you chose to carry 4 people
in a F24 anyway? The wrench in OK who runs an engine shop and owns an F24
says he can overnight a cylinder anywhere in the US anytime whereas I am not
certain that can be said for a Warner or Ranger?
I have considered converting my Meyers to a 220 as one in Phoenix if the
Kinner ever gives up the ghost. I have a zero time R56 in my hangar as we
speak but would consider selling it to convert to a more reliable
Continental 220.
Just trying to offer advice that is more sensible than still trying
to find OLD parts such as for the Warner, minimize expenses, and "why" would
you worry if you can afford an airplane anyway.
Trust me; our Continental powered F24 is very reliable and a wee bit
different. I know of another one owner in OK with a Continental F24 that is
recently rebuilt and another being restored in OK with a Continental.

Most floatplanes have a higher MTOW that their landplane equivalent.
The floats provide aerodynamic lift so their complete additional weight
isnt supported by the wing.

Why would the TBO matter for part 91 operation? Are you working your
old Fairchild?
And Im glad the Continental is doing well for you, Dick. Im certain
its an easier engine to support and a little more power never hurts.

Re: Continental STC for F24
'This will likely go in mine...not sure at the moment how the weight compares with
the Warner ( I think John Berendt mentioned Warner weights before). I do know
that the Curtis Reed prop is no flyweight and a wood prop could go on the M14D
engine so I'd guess the weight issue might not be too bad a deal.

All I'm looking for is two place with full tanks and about 130 lbs of camping/traveling
gear. If I can't get that with the 24/M14D, I'll dump the 24 and get on with the 51
project with a Housai or M14P.
