Ive always joked that changing the oil on a Ranger was redundant
because I change it every time I go flying. Just out of curiosity, I
did some back of the envelope figuring tonight and realized that its
actually true. Assuming you add 1 quart of fresh oil each hour and the
capacity of the system is 5 gallons, the average age of the oil in the
engine never exceeds 19 hours. If you use more than 1 quart / hour or
dont refill as frequently, the average age is less.

I came across an aerial picture that shows the Ranger factory in
Farmingdale around 1938:

the right margin about half way down the page.

'Hmmm... let's see. The latest quote for a DRUM of Aeroshell w100 or
w120 is $502. At 50hrs annually and 1qt/hr that's 12.5 gal/year. A
drum will last 4 years w/o changes, so thats $125 annual oil costs.
Obviously, up or down according to flight time. But even at 100 hrs
annually(or 2qts/hr at50hrs/yr), $250 in oil. It will take a lot of
flying to justify all the cost and trouble of the attempts to dry up
a Ranger.
