'Mike,
I will send you a copy of the flyer that has an article in it on shielding
the magneto. The event in Hagerstown is a one day event put on by the county
historical society. The information is in the next issue of the flyer. that
is at the printers now.

'Hi rottenchild38 I also have a 38 f-24, with a ranger engine, that makes
terrible static that no one around here seems able to fix. Is your F-24 a
short nosed plane. Mine is and I understand that there are not many of the
short nosed ones around.
I have decided to take off the generator and have new brushes
installed. My thinking is that the brushes may be arcing and thus making
the static.
I lost a wheel cover and snap ring, after the last annual, and talked
to someone in Florida who might have one, but I lost his phone number. Do
you know anyone who might have any for sale?
I am rebuilding a 39 F-24 that has a Jacobs 225hp engine.
You spoke of a Fairchild re-union. I didn't realize that there was such a
thing. Where and when does the next one occur? I would like to talk to
you.

'Michael?:

I, too, have a bad static problem with my radio, newly installed 2
years ago. The avionics shop declared it "P-lead noise" and said it
wasnt their problem. The radio is usable but Im told its noisy; I get
a lot of "Say Again"s from ATC and often lose useful reception before I
get handed off. I have a fully-shielded ignition system and a Jasco
alternator.

Ive asked for advice from various sources, but I havent found anyone
who can actually diagnose the problem other than just attempting to
replace parts, e.g., new ignition harness, new filters, new P-leads,
etc., and my bank account is wary of such trial and error.

'We had static and ignition noise on our PT-26 until we had new shielded P
Leads and ignition harness made by Savage Magneto in CA. Still have a little
but I think the noise we have now is due to unshielded wiring in the
installation of the mic and phone jacks.

If your static keeps time with your engine, it may be mag noise.

If it is a steady buzz that increases with electrical load it may be
your alternator.

There are "P" lead filters that you can buy that install on the mags
to stop mag noise.

And alternator filters to stop noise from there.'

My noise seems to be mag related: it varies with RPM and doesnt change
if I turn off the alternator field.

Yup. I have them. One theory is that at least one has lost
effectiveness, but its a costly experiment to change them and see if it
helps. Eventually I may just have to bite the bullet.

'Gene, when they installed the new P leads, did they ground both ends of
the shield or just one?

'Hello rottenchild38,

I have a Fairchild 24 K, and have a very good radio. I do not have
any filters. I have two suggestions:
Make sure that your P-Leads are grounded on ONE end of the wire, NOT
both ends of the wire.
If your P-Leads are correctly grounded and you still have static,
you should 'temporarily' power your radio from a source other than
your airplanes battery. If the static goes away, then the static
was coming from the airplane's power supply. If the static still
exists, then it is being introduced from someplace on the airplane
(probably the generator or wiring harness).
If the static came from the airplane's power supply, you should
temporarily power your radio directly from the airplane's battery,
without going through any existing electrical buss. If the static
goes away, then permanently install a separate buss for your radio
and intercom.

All efforts to find static should be done with headsets connected to
the radio, not to the intercom. Intercoms can introduce their own
static, and should be isolated from the equation until the radio is
working static-free.
