transponder

Post by robert hensarling »

'Hi guys. I'm having a starter put in my PT19, and have been thinking about
a transponder also since I'll have an elecrical system. Any ideas as to a
really inexpensive way to go?
Thanks!Robert Hensarling

'Robert,

Are you going to install a full up Elec system or just the Batt and Starter.
If no Alt or Gen install, then not required to have a Transponder. That is
the best $$ way out.

'Well, you still wouldn't need a transponder, but you wouldn't be exempt
anymore from having one in Class B & C airspace or the mode C veils
around the big cities. If you don't go there much, you could still
leave out the transponder. That would save about $1000.

That's true Scott. Maybe I won't get one, but I do like flight following.
Just seems safer if "Center" knows where I am, even when squawking 1200.
Will think about this some more. $1,000 will buy a weeks worth of oil for
my Ranger :o)

'Rolling on the floor laughing! Technically, you can still get flight
following (I have from Duluth, MN) without a transponder (also when I
flew into Springfield, IL Class C). They have you make a turn to
identify you then they provide info for you. I don't know if "Center"
will do that, but the smaller airports with radar have always
accomodated me and my little Corben :)

Do you own an oil well there in Texas to keep that Ranger lubed? ;)

I don't own any oil wells (my good friend Richard Smith has the monopoly on
those), but maybe if I tie little buckets along the trailing edge of the
center section I can catch about 90% of the breather oil and recycle it.
Seriously, Richards 19 has a breather tube that runs the length of his
airplane, and exits just aft of the tailwheel. Seems like a great idea and
solution to a messy problem. I'm always on my back cleaning the oil off of
my airplane. Am I alone in this? Any other solutions/suggestions?

Re: transponder

Post by Scott »

'Well, we experimental guys sometimes route the breather tube to drip on
the exhaust maifold to burn the excess oil. Here in Wisconsin (or at
high altitudes) running the tube out back to the tailwheel has a
problem. Besides oil, there is usually water vapor along with the oil
and it ends up freezing and blocking the tube. When the pressure builds
up enough, it vents through the engine front seal and creates any even
bigger mess...especially in the pilot's shorts ;)
