Tail Wheel Assembly

Post by Lars Overgaard Rasmussen »

'Hi. I am rebuilding a F24W (UC-61A) with a Warner eng.
I would like to know, if anyone could help me finding out, which Tail Wheel
Assembly I have installed.
My Tail wheel is free pivoting with coil spring, and I think with oil in the
strut. I have been told that it is a later version. The problem is, I don?t
know which type of Assy it is, and therefore can?t find any manual for it.
I have the UC-61A Airplane Pats Catalog, but the Tail Tail Wheel Assembly in
there, is not the one I have.
I know, it is not a lot of information, but hopefully someone can help me.

Regards Lars'

Dear Lars,

You have a tailwheel strut, which was installed on some, but not on
all lend lease aircraft for the Royal Air Force. I have just
disassembled one and it is a pressure type. Its probably from DUNLOP.
I've made drawings and photos for a Fairchild restorer in Danmark. If
you get in touch with me, I will send copies of the drawing or scetch.
I also would like to know the construction number and USAAF serial of
your aircraft.

'Karl,

If you would send a set of drawings, photos whatever so that I can document that on the CD Rom. I can send them back after they are scanned in, or scan them in and I will incorporate.

'Hi Jamie,

These drawings from the british tailwheel assembly are only a rough
scetch, just to note how the thing is assembled. To put it on the CD-
rom I will have to rework it and the writing to be translated into
english. That will take some time.

My guess is that those air-oleo assemblies were available surplus in
the late 40ties in the UK. To install them in the UC-61's, they only
had to drill two holes in the lower longerons and screw them on. I
have never heard of any paperwork or STC. Well, who did care in
Europe after WW2. I do not think they are still avalable. Also it's
prone to shimmy with the original wheel and tire. I recently
converted it to a Scott wheel with 10in tire. That helped a lot. I
always make wheelers on hard surfaces. See picture in Fairchild Flyer
March 1990. I note there are some flying in Australia too.

Best regards

'Kar.

Take your time. If you think we need to document the data lets do so.
