VMN7DF mag parts

Post by Tom Downey »

'I am looking for a source for parts, and manuals for the Bendix 7
cylinder mag (VMN7DF) for the warner 165. I had a difficult time
starting the Warner, and pulled the mags and found a broken
distributor block in the left mag.
I also have a lot of mag noises in the radios from both mags, I
checked continuity from the mag case to the outer fairel of the spark
plug and found it is not radio shielded.
Are there leads which can be placed in the harness that are shielded?

'Hi Tom Downey
I just joined the fairchildclubgroup.
I have a copy of the Handbook - Operation, Service, and Overhaul Instructions
with Parts Catalog. It is for VMN7D, VMN7DF, AND VMN7DF-5 Aircraft Magnetos.
I can send you a copy for the cost of printing & shipping.
John Duncan now has the Warner parts I used to sell. I think there were some
Dist
Blocks among those parts. His address & phone is Box 2, Palmer Lake, CO
80133.
719-481-4115. I kept some stuff for my own use. If you get in a bind I can
loan you a Block till you find one.
Guess there are many ways to shield plug wires. I bought shielded wire and
cut the black plastic off the wire shielding, pushed the shielding back up
the wire, then cut the next layer of rubber or plastic off which left the
inner layer the right diameter and length to slip down the hole in the dist.
block. The shielding can then be streched to go around the nut on the metal
mag. block shield.
My phone no. is 859-277-3303.

Hi Jamie Treat,
I see in the spring 2001 issue of the Fairchild Newsletter that you are
looking for service bulletins on the Warner engines to put on the CD's. I
have copies of all the Service Letters on the Warner engines. I have copies
of all the other manuals Warner printed plus most of the accessories. It
might be nice to have it all on CD's for the Warner owners.
I've used computers for years for business, but I'm new to the Internet
stuff. I don't have a scanner or a way to make CD's. Maybe we can figure out
something.

If you get in a bind I can

Thanks George, I would like a copy of the Bendix Mag manual, and will
gladly pay what you ask.

I have a Rotor on the way from Fresno Air Parts should be here by
wed.

I have a roll of electro shield that I am going to stretch over the
harness that I have, and cover that with heat shrink tubing. If that
don't work I'll try the new shielded wire leads.

I tried him this morning, he works short hours, and said he had
what I needed, but wanted $200.00 for a rotor. My wife balked at
that,
and said we would get back to him. I couldn't call him till monday,
So I checked with Fresno Air Parts this after noon, the rotor was
$57.00. it will be shipped monday. I should have it wed. with a tube
of grease.
I also found a VNM7DF Mag on E-bay, and bought it for 50 bucks and
shipping. I should have the Fairchild running again by next week,
watch it rain then.
What kinds of opinions do we have on the AIR_TECH covering systems ?

'I have used the Air Tech system on a couple of aircraft and if you
like the "plastic look" then use it. Of all the urethane systems I
have used it is probably the best. I still prefer dope finishes.
Sorry the price was high that is probably why I have not called them
in a while.

'No it is not bad, I happen to like the look and feel of a handrubbed
dope finish. Airtech finish if done right looks nice but it feels
like rubber. The plus' to dope is after several years it can be
rejuevenated to like new again were the Airtech finish cannot. When
the plasticizers finally leave the urethane it's time to recover.
Depending on your fly habits and how the airplane is cared for will
depend on how long the finish will last. That could be 10 years or
20. Postwar Fairchilds I think were all handrubbed and polished and
it was an option on the prewars. Putting a really slick finish on a
