Delco Remy Regulator
'Robert,
Page 50 Ranger parts manual lists approved accessories for Ranger and
the Delco Remy voltage regulator is shown as P/N 1118254. These
manuals have all this data. The Ranger type NA1 #6631 gen. when
combined with the above regulator is quite a reliable unit tho' a bit
limited in capacity. As far as the Jasco alt. there are some strange
radial engine failures recently that the rebuilders have pointed a
finger at the alternator. Claim that the alternator has a certain eddy
current/ magnetic field/blah,blah,blah is set up around the rear main
brg and magnetizing it, attracting all the crap in the oil to the brg.
Don't know if any truth to it but something to chew on. If you want a
simple and safe capacity increase look at the Ranger manual access.
and you will find that the Eclipse type309 gen bolts right on and has
25 amp. capicity at not much more wt. than NA1. Control box would be
Eclipse type320 or 321. Bear in mind when increasing capicity of
dynamo let's verify the rest of the system can handle it.Those wires,
fuse holders ammeters switches etc.'

'I can verify the radial failures with the Jasco. I landed on Interstate 10 in NM due to this. Ask Bob Etter. He saw the remains!
I REFUSE to put them on anything. They can run a 20 inch dia. magnetic field. Some have had them interfere with mags, rear case gears, crank bearings, ignition harness, etc.. We believe it is only the Chrysler alt. that does this.
If the Eclipse fits I would go that way ONLY if I needed it. You can find a larger amp gen. to fit I believe.

'I used the 15 amp Eclipse generator with a regulator from National
Aviation Parts Assoc.(NAPA) and it worked fine. Never had a noise
issue with the generator on the radio or intercom(did put filters on
the mags though). I don't know if I can track down the particular
regulator I used, but I'll check. Also had plenty of juice for a
radio, xpndr, encoder, intercom, nav lights and beacon.
Regarding the Jasco...I would tend to believe the radial
engine/magnetic field story as I know when Jack Labounty put a Jasco
on his PT he found that the magnetic field was the length of the
engine going aft. Reason being it made a field both directions equal
to the length of the access. drive shaft. Don't know if could affect
the bearings or gears in the Ranger, but it sure kept the front
cockpit compass from working. No amount of shielding, ground, etc.
would help. Swapped out alternators a couple of times with Jasco with
no improvement. Apparently radial guys have had the same problem, but
sometimes different alternators wouldn't be as bad.
Anyway, no matter how they tried, with the alt. on the compass pointed
north. Finally fixed it by putting a remote compass(with the head
under the back seat) in the front cockpit.

Just talked to Covington and now taking to Skytronics. Covington has not had any problems for twenty years. So this may be happening to the smaller engines only.

'O.K. Understand that there seems to be something that has gone on with the Cont. 220 installation, but, did anyone post anything factual about any problems with Jasco / Skytronics on the Ranger installation??? Factual! Thanks guys.
