'Dear group,
I just joined up. Have just brought home a very pretty 24W40 to Texas
from San Diego. I am working on some uploads to my website
www.planeplace.com to chronicle a wonderful trip from Gillespie
Field, El Cajon, CA to Spicewood, TX. I have communicated with some
of you with many questions during the aquisition period -- Thanks to
all who helped with advice and encouragement.
The plane is a great flyer -- a bit more power would be nice, but a
real gentle machine. It will take some time before I can plant a
landing and keep a perfect roll-out on the hard surfaced runways!
The wide gear (and the pilot) really walks on a wheel landing -- I
think the best results were full-flap, 3pt. At least nothing happens
too fast in this wonderful old airplane.
My notes, so far, is I think my Warner 145 is a bit "over propped".
Static RPM is not-quite 1800rpm max--and you have to lean to get
there. I am running an earlier SS50 taper-shaft with the Hartzell
706E prop that shows a 63" pitch -- We'll be tinkering with all
aspects of the engine to see if we can get a few more RPM, but I do
have some interest in finding a more "climb" pitch prop and hub.
Keep those inputs coming -- the original std. configuration was a
Sensenich -- also 63" pitch, however a 58" was an option. Any info
on similar experience with this engine/prop combo greatly appreciated!
Glad to be on "the list"
Thanks,
Glenn'

'Hi Glenn and group,
I, too, have an F24W40, but I have a 165 Warner on it. My manual indicates
that the prop you are using was standard equipment for the tapershaft Warner
on a Fairchild C8E. The manual lists the same pitch (63") for both the taper
and spline shaft models. As I read it, the only 58" props optional were all
on Ranger powered models. If anyone out there has more comprehensive data,
let Glenn know.
I have a 69" pitch on my 165 and it turns up 1900 static easily. Maybe you
have some other problem keeping you from getting more on static. By the way,
what rpm does it cruise at? The book lists 1910 as cruise setting.

'Glenn,
Before you trade the prop in see if you have it running it's best. You may pick up some rpms and like it. May not!
You should run 120 or better but takeoff is not impressive in the heat in Texas.
If you decide to get another prop let me know. I am a Falcon ( Fahlin) distributor and can provide props and hubs.
I will be gone until the 28th.

'Earl,
Thanks for the note -- we cruised at 1750 -- could get 1900 if required, but no need. 1750 yielded about 100+ mph true and fuel burn of just under 10gph.
I am looking into the other possible issues with static rpm.
Thanks for the note.
GC.
