I'm using almost 2 quarts per hour, sometimes less. Engine has about 230
hours since major.
How worried should I be? When should I have a "top" done?

'Robert,

Two qts an hour at 2250 is STD, the slower the engine speed the less your
going to use. Right now I'm only turning 2000 with the 0-93 Aeromatic, I put
a qt in about every three hours, I leak more than use. Bob Haas had an
engine that was not overhauled within standards when he purchased it and used
lots of oil ferrying it home to Fla. He has since rebuilt and is doing fine.
As for time to Major or Top, I go until it does not make compression or makes
metal. My old Ranger has been together since day one from the factory, never
a top, never a Cyl off. Been running 60 wt Mineral and 100 Oct. Pushing 700
TTSNEW and still makes 76/78 comp cold. The key is run them consistent and
run them often. An idle engine is its own worse enemy. Use that Marvel
Mystery oil and change the oil every 25 hours or sooner. I also have an ADC
Oil Filtration system approved via one time field, have not installed, will
do on next overhaul. The more you can clean up the oil the less the wear. Ed
Wegner has a separate oil filter system on his Ranger also.

Seems like I'm in good shape then Jamie, my compressions are good. I do use
the MMO in the fuel, but haven't put any in the oil. I use the 60 wt. oil.
I'd be interested in learning about the oil filtering system eventually, if
the paperwork isn't a nightmare. Right now my 19 is at Robbie Vajdos strip
in Louise, Tx getting the electrical system installed (Robbie said the work
would only take a few days, but the paperwork would take a lot longer).
When I get it home I'll do an oil change, and try to find some of those
little copper crush washers, check the screens, and I'll be set for winter.
Flying here in South Texas during the winter months
isn't to bad, but it takes forever to warm up the oil.

'Robert,

Use an oil dipstick heater from your local NAPA Auto Parts Store. Plug it in
the night before and your oil will be 45 to 50 degrees when you start. I use
one in Idaho throuought the winter. Sure makes the warmups faster.

HEY! Now that's a neat idea Al, thanks! I usually spend at least 25
minutes getting the oil to temp, seems like that is hard on the engine also.
I'll give the stick a try.

'All,

Be careful on the oil dipsticks, get a good one. Some will get to hot and
burn the oil and you will have excessive wear of the metal parts. It will
break down the oil. The best way to go is the heated pad on the back side of
the tank. Bond it on, plug it in to the 110 socket and forget about it.
See the following web site for pad preheaters.
