Fuel sump drains

My '37 24G has 20 gallon tanks with the sump drain mid-tank at the fuel pickup point. With the tailwheel on the ground, there is significant volume lower than the sump drain for water to collect undetected. How do others pre-flight to eliminate unwanted fuel collection?
