Has anyone removed the (front) crankshaft thrust bearing in a Warner 185/R-550? We indexed the shaft the other day and it's right on limits. We've made the tool for removing the retaining nut, and are about to have a look, but just wondering if there is anyone here I could talk to about the whole thing. Thanks, Dave'

'Disregard, thanks. We used my new FA-274 tool -- the thrust bearing retainer wrench -- and discovered that the retaining nut wasn't tight at all. It's supposed to have 6000+ in-lbs. In reality, we loosened it with one hand on the tool! So, we tightened up the nut with the wrench, and the play/runout in the shaft vanished, just like it's supposed to. But the bearing itself is full of gunky sludge oil residue from 30 years of use. I'm glad we had a look -- I can now clean that up a bit. Also, the drain hole in the thrust bearing cover plate, that allows the bearing oil to get back into the crankcase, was partially plugged. This is part of the reason we had an oil leak out the front. And the ancient paper gasket was pretty much gone.
