PT-19 Brake Bladders.

Post by avdflyr »

'
Hey guys, I just put hydraulic juice into my NEW, NOS, (purchased two years ago from 'the barrel") and pressed the brake pedals. My brake bladders leaked all over the floor on both brakes. Is there any "fresh" bladders out there anywhere. Or, who is now selling GOOD NOS bladders.??

' Convert to Cleveland systemWe fought against it for a few years, but finally gave in and converted to the Cleveland Brake System. We should have done it at the beginning of the restoration on our UC-61K, fighting with leaking bladders and temperamental Hayes Brakes and lack of GOOD parts  finally help us cross over to ClevelandsJim CUC-61K N24FM

'James offered very good advice on the Clevelands. If you look at the last production date for the 24 series and add about 5 years to that and odds are there was no renewed production of any of the rubber parts of any of the 24 series systems unless they were still actively being installed in other oem's aircraft  at the time. Standardized items like O-rings and etc. excluded. That new NOS brake tube you purchased was at least 40 shelf years old. The chance of finding something newer is very slim. '

' MikeWe used the Cessna 310 Wheel, so Tires size stayed same, and Cessna 210, 2 puck Brake set up.  We worked closely with Jamie Treat, and the FAA Chicago Fisdo. We had an engineering firm assist in the design for a Brake Drum to Wheel adapter and received a FAA Field Approval (337) for N24FM, our UC-61K  / F24R46.  There are a few others out there that have also been very successful with conversion to Cleveland systems. When your ready, I can help you.

' We did buy NOS bladders from 3 different sources, 1 set was so stiff we could not get any movement out of the tube, one set leaked at the stem. Glue must have dried around the valve stem neck. the 3rd set worked good on the bench, but after install, and some taxi tests we noticed fading brakes one day, and grabbing brakes another.  After we removed them for inspection, we noticed the best set of Bladder tubes we installed had some hard spots that would not expand the same distance as the rest of the tube. After about 9 months of fighting that gremlin, for our safety, and those around us, we converted to the Cleveland system.I am sure there are still many aircraft flying and using they HAYES system just fine. But for us, we modernized.

'Is it possible that someone can provide part numbers for both the 310 Cessna and for the 210 Cessna parts required to make this conversion. It appears as though the 210 brake pads are preferred with the 310 wheels. Also if there is a 337, or a field approval available that someone could make available to the membership, if this hasn't been done before of course., It would certainly be a great help to all concerned.Fritz
