'??Hi all,
I created this group 20 yrs ago and am the group owner. I was in a serious car wreck three weeks ago and am just now getting back up to speed. Great timing, eh?  I have also been transitioning the group ownership to Brian Barrett, who is extremely qualified to carry it forward. Neither of us expected this crisis to come with so little warning, but viability of Yahoo Groups has been a worry since Yahoo’s sale to Verizon.
I want you to know that I have purchased and used a tool called PG Online to archive the entire group contents (over 13,000 posts) and our 600+ group membership details. This archive is securely stored in multiple locations.
I’ll fill you in on what Brian and I are contemplating over this weekend. Meanwhile, rest assured that our group data is safely out of Yahoo’s grip.

'Just a note to bring you all up to date on where we are with our exodus from Yahoo Groups.
Yahoo Groups continues to function past the 28 October deadline, at least as far as posting goes. Brian and I have secured a copy of all our group content thru 10/28. I will continue to use the Group to keep you abreast of our progress for as long as it functions.
Yesterday Brian installed a basic version of the forum software (phpBB} into a test area and make it wiggle.  phpBB is a free, open source program that is the underpinning of many popular type group forums. Much work remains, but this is a big milestone.
We intend to make the new forum available as soon as possible. It may go live before the archived posts are added, as the automated process to move them into the forum is still under development. With 13,000 posts to import we need that. The automation software is being written by the provider of the archiving software, and should be available ‘real soon now’.

What will we have when our forum is up and running?
Here are two examples of phpBB based forums:
The International Cessna 170 Association:   http://www.cessna170.org/forums/viewforum.php?f=8
BeechTalk:  https://www.beechtalk.com/forums/
Forums arrange posts into topic areas, making it much easier to find what’s been previously written about a particular topic. On the Cessna 170 site, the home page shows 5 major topics, which in turn reveal subtopics when clicked.
Thus, the major topic ‘The Hangar’ is described as “How to keep the Cessna 170 flying and airworthy”. Clicking on it reveals member created maintenance topics, along with the number of times they have been viewed and the number of posts to the topic.
I’m planning on giving our forum subtopics more granularity than the 170 folks and more like the breakout on the BeechTalk forum. We can alter the structure as needed in the future.
On the 170 forum, each major topic has moderators assigned to it. These moderators are content experts, and have the authority to curate the posts in their topics. This means they can move posts from topic to topic, remove inappropriate posts, and even ban users who fail to follow the forum rules. Setting up  moderators is part of the customization of the forum, and once we have our forum running, we’ll be looking for volunteers to serve.
Beyond the new forum, there are issues in photo and attachment storage, and the old fairchildclub.org web site, which is currently broken. We will tackle those after we have a viable forum running.
I will continue to post to this thread to keep you abreast of our progress.

Group to Forums Migration Status (and a preview!)

Post by dcasali »

'As of today (11/12/2020), the Yahoo Group continues to function and all content remains online. On December 14th, Yahoo has stated that all content will be removed from the web interface. Our goal is to have the new forums up and accepting postings by that date. Whether the prior group content is also online at that date is not entirely in our control, but if not it will follow expeditiously.
User registration (and thus posting) at the forums will be disabled until we firm up the forum structure with your help. I don't want to deal with preserving real content as we shuffle our forums into final form. My goal is to open up registration not later than December 14th.
You may view a draft of the forums at the following location:
http://board.bbarrett.org/index.php?sid=838dd353fcd2d3e5a765a2faaabbe3d8

The forum "Forum Comments and Suggestions", at the top, is now open to posting by unregistered users. Please look over the draft structure and post your comments there. All other forums are closed to posting for the time being.
We have secured copies of all 20+ years of group  postings, along with all photos and attachments that were on the Yahoo site. We are awaiting completion of importing modules that will allow us to bring the postings into our new forums. Hopefully, prior "conversations" (emails that share a common subject) will be converted into "topics" in the forums. It will be up to us to move these topics into the appropriate forum, and this will take a good deal of time and the effort of forum moderators (volunteers needed).

As you will see from the draft of the forums, we have made progress in bringing the forums online. We hope to integrate the old club web site (fairchildclub.org - which is currently not functional) with the forums, and host the old photo galleries there. There is some administrivia that must be dealt with before that can happen, but it will be resolved.
While we have saved the Yahoo Group membership list of over 600 members by name and email address, it is unclear if we will be able to directly import these members into the forum. Worst case members may need to re-register at the forum- a simple process. The phpBB software will finally give us the ability to reset passwords directly rather than go through the rather obscure Yahoo process, and there will be no need to have any involvement with Yahoo.
Our forum software base, phpBB, supports directly attaching images to your posts, a desirable feature, but we have run into a technical issue that is currently interfering with that. We are troubleshooting that issue.
I'll continue to update here and at the forum as we progress. Please pass on your suggestions.
ThanksDan Casali'

'Hi All,
We are making progress on the new forum. Brian has worked around difficulties in redirecting the old fairchildclub.org URL to this forum by obtaining a new (but similar) domain along with a security certificate for it. The forum can now be reached at:  https://board.fairchild-club.org                                        ^ !! Please note the hyphen between fairchild and club  !!
The security certificate will keep your browser from complaining that you are on an insecure web page when you visit.
Brian also resolved the issue preventing the attachment of image files to posts.
I have rearranged the initial forum structure somewhat, putting more emphasis on, and detail in,  the 24 series and PT's forums.
Much work remains, but I hope we can open the forums for users in early December, with certain features following later. There has been no progress as yet on transferring our archives to the forum, but the data at least is safe for now.
Best, Dan Casali and Brian Barrett'

Dan: A small request... Could you add a Miscellaneous sub forum under the Types? I'm the oddball, with the  AT-21, and I don't fit under the listed types.  It's possible one of these days to maybe get some of the C-82 and -119 guys to be a part of the group too.

' Dan, I understand you have the Fairchild Group email archives. Correct? If so, I would like to have a copy of the file(s). Is that possible? Perhaps you could put it on the website somewhere that I could download it? I don't need images. Just the list email.

Thanks, David
