What the best method of unscrewing the top cap?
Does the strut need to be compressed a little to remove the top cap, or can you just start removing it unloaded?
Thanks.

'Ok, thanks.
I guess I was thinking I would remove it from the airplane then disassemble.
But I guess loosening it with weight on it then removing will work as well.
Thanks'

I raised the airplane by the engine mounts and removed the legs (one at a time) amd got some iron pipe to replace the legs with some drilling involved. The size of the 4130 tubing is in the maintenance manual. (Long gone) Then I put the old legs in a lathe and turned off the upper leg fittings. really just surface cuts and the old upper leg fittings popped right out. Welded the old upper leg fittings onto the new 4130. The lower leg leathers or whatever they were, were fine. Reassembled it all and it rode like a Caddilac. Hope this helped. 'Ah, re-read your post.
Got it.
Thats pretty neat, I'm guessing when they were building these airplanes that just kept it simple.
I like it.'
