Re: powder coat

'I purchased a project with a scrapped F24 H fuselage that was powder coated, and the paint looks great, but be careful. Have the sand blasted structure carefully inspected and repaired as needed before the powder coating is applied.  That coating is very thick, very difficult to remove and can not be reapplied without burning all the old coat off. From my experience I would not recommend it.

I have a English wheel on its original stand that was powder coated when new, has been inside my shop for several years, now the powder coating is flaking off and there is rust under all of what came off, my vote is use good epoxy primer and paint, or just the epoxy primer.

I did - UC61K (Argus) - the difficulty I had in UK was finding a company with a large enough oven to take it.

Has anyone powder coated an airframe. I am considering having my F24w40 bead blasted and powder coated. I have done it with other things and the coating is nearly indestructable and rust proof. Thoughts?

Best method to prepare an airframe is carefully blast then paint IMMEDIATELY with epoxy primer. Do it on a low humidity day and prime the same day to prevent rust forming.  I'm not aware of a better metal prep for an airframe than epoxy primer. You can paint 2k urethane on top of the primer if you want to make it pretty, but epoxy primer is enough on bare metal all by itself. Apply paint over epoxy within 24 hours to avoid the need to rough up the primer to get proper adhesion. If painting after the 24 hour window, you should scotch brite the whole thing before painting (oof!!)

'I am told by those in 'The know' that the secret of powder coating longevity is good priming (I don't know with what) before they spray the powder. I have noted that the powder coating on some of my agricultural machines flakes off one week after the warranty expires! - no primer under it.

' #ygrps-yiv-1883792695 P {margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;} a good powder coating needs: sandblasting to bar metal, degreasing and drying then immediately powder priming+ first cure then color powder coating + second cure
don't forget that t will then last quite long a time, but can return to powder/mat aspect after years outdoor (see bus-stop shelter or public lighting that are powder coated)
On an aircraft airframe, mainly under fuselage fabric or cowlings, and a hangar, that will last a century...
