leaky valve cover

Post by Ranchaero Wing Shop »

'We had the Ranger rebuilt by a nearby rebuilder. The engine is leaking
oil at the valve cover studs/nuts. I see there is no fiber washer there
or anything other than the valve cover gasket. What do you guys do when
this happens? I don't think the rebuilder had much experience with
Rangers and neither do I. It looks to me like it needs some sort of
sealing washer there.

'There is no gasket.  Just sealant and silk thread, if used.  Make sure sealant/thread is inboard of the studs.

' Thanks again. What do you think of the silk thread? An advantage on a valve cover?

' effectively... no gasket of any kind from the cylinderhead side down to the rocker cover.... Only few sealant, such as blue hylomar, or red Loctite. And by the way, allow only the use of flat washer under nuts.....(no grower or else that will leak).
