Re: Hydraulic Brake Hose

Post by Pete Crawford »

' Thanks for the reply.

It seems everyone sells inverted flare fittings;  the problem is that the other end of the fitting is always a pipe thread.  Even if you use the old fitting on the new hose, you will still have to have it fitted with an 11/16 x 16 female thread, and no one seems to have that.

The easy solution is to use a conventional hose with B-nuts on each end and join with unions.

Parker still makes'em,  you may have to hunt the auto parts places to find them. Piper used them a lot through the Sixties as well.

You're probably referring to the "inverted flare" (I think it's called) fittings used on the PT brake lines. I tried to find some new ones and failed. I ended up modernizing the brake system with C-310 Cleveland wheels and brakes which is why I could get the hoses from Aero Performance using AN fittings except for the two master cylinders fittings.

I'm still working on this conversion. The big problem is finding rubber parts for 5606 fluid that fit the goodyear master cylinders. Automotive brake kits rubber parts not compatible with 5606 fluid. Dot 5 silicon fluid works with auto brake kits and clevelend brakes, but because I do a lot of painting, I'm not willing to risk silicon contamination in my shop. Dot 3 and 4 eat paint and are great paint strippers. The 5606 conversion is ultimately the better solution IMO.

It would be great to find a modern aircraft master cylinder that would work in the PT without major modification. Anyone know of one?

'Most Parker stores ( I forget the franchise name at the moment) will custom make whatever hose you want - just give them the length, fittings, diameter, pressure rating, and fluid and they should be able to get something together for you. Just don’t tell them it’s going on an airplane!

' They are listed in the Parker catalog, but when I contacted Parker to order, after much repeat calling and leaving messages for people who were "out to lunch," or "away from their desk," never returning my calls, finally after much persistence they said they didn't have any and would not have any in the future. The people at Parker were not very friendly or helpful. And I was very careful to be polite and hide my disappointment with their crappy customer service. Maybe it would work to call again and perhaps get a different rep.

Yes, maybe if you hunt the auto parts stores, maybe you'll find some. Good luck...or as my dad used to say, "Rotsa ruck."

Maybe the classic car guys could help. I finally gave up and am modernizing mine. Not without it's own set of challenges.

' If my memory serves me correct Parker, sold a tube beading kit.  The fact of the hand beading kit used knobs that are, at least on my set, are exactly the same as those used on the control sticks of the late model 24's.   There is only 1 minor difference.  The thread of the stud is the same.  The 24's knob has a short threaded stud, but that used on the Parker tools are female.  Except for the stud, the knobs are identical.Bob

Magneto couplings

Post by Emil Dular »

'Have a 24-C8F in the shop and the rubber magneto couplings are shrunk,
dried out and harder than Chinese arithmetic.?? The Ranger part number is
6474.?? Anyone have spares or know of a source? Fresno Air Parts has the
metal has the 6363 coupling.?? It is similar in appearance to the rubber
coupling used on the P&W 985 and 1340, but don't have one handy to
compare??? Are they interchangeable? Since J&C in Benton is gone it's
been rougher fining stuff.

'Emil, I have several NOS Ranger mag drive couplings, but all are dried up and hard. If you can find a technical drawing for them, you may be better off having new ones manufactured.I know I would be interested in fresh couplings.

I would be interested in a copy of the drawing.?? It would be useful in determining if a coupling presently available is compatible.
Thanks,
