HI FRANK,
I have a pretty original stuff. I will try to make a pics this week or at the end of the month. My KK 502 S/N 1120 is very original - in fact like it left the factory (I'm restoring it now) I have this fairing for sure.

Folks - Happy new year to all.

Does anyone have a copy of Drawing or photos of PN 411051 (figure 24 item 3 in the UC61K parts manual) for the fairing under the rear of the tail they could e-mail me. Mine have seen some 'Modifications!' and some unprofessional repairs in the distant past. I would like to get them as correct as possible if I can.The drawing is not on the CD.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi everyone,

I've just found a cracks on the front prop hub plate on
my Ranger powered UC 61K. We are able to manufacture new
one. Could somebody send me a type of material and heat
treatment required? (we found that HRD is 88, which is
pretty ordinary steel)

Thanks very much indeed,

'Hi Jiri

I have KK527 which I restored a few years ago now. I'd very much like to see some pictures of your restoration!

I'm planning to display round the UK circuits next year. We did the Jersey Airshow last year where the Argus went down very well with the crowd.

Any information you require please don't hesitate to ask.

Regards

Prop Hub material UC 61K Argus III

Post by Ji?í Horák »

'Hi Terry,

my hub is Warner 8808 6 bolt. Just a plate had a cracks, the hub is OK. I've had same issue on my Stearman. My only the concern about buying one is, that it may have same issue (cracks) if the part is not newly manufactured.
We can manufacture a new one here.

Thanks very much,
Jiri

Jiri,
In lieu of finding the original material for your propeller plate, McMaster Carr Company, in the US, has certified 4130 alloy steel plate, in suitable dimensions, of Rockwell hardness B85, very close to B88 you specified. The 4130 plate can be heat treated to C60.  Also, check out "making an aircraft propeller hub" on YouTube. Good machining information and also a material suggestion which makes sense considering the application for an aircraft propeller clamping, pressure(friction) plate.

Hi Terry
Do you know where I could get a 6 bolt hub for my Ranger engine? I currently have an 8 bolt fitted but have a brand new prop available which is 6 bolt!
Many thanks

please start with what part number is on your existing hub. also Fairchild used several mfgs for hubs. John Duncan has several WARNER 6 bolt warner hubs and may have source for the 8 bolt.I have used both on Rangers . the Sensenich tcds lists:hubs;7900, 8350, 8599
8808, 43D24385 and all are available for purchase. you might be able to find a source for the hub under US AN parts specifications drawings which thes hubs will meet

'Jiri, Be sure to review all Sensenich technical documents for installation of wood propellers, all available on internet, when reinstalling your propeller and hub and for periodic maintenance requirements. The cracks in your front plate may be fatigue cracks from cyclic loading of the plate due to improper/uneven bolt torques. Also, consider having your hub tested for internal cracks which may not be visible on the hub surfaces.

Thanks very much Hugh,
we did a complete NDT with friends from a big airline maintenace dept. The main hub is fine and plate is cracked. I believe that this is an original hub and front plate. The same was with Stearman.
Attached plate with cracks found. I have a Sensenich docs. they are very good!!

Jiri, Be sure to review all Sensenich technical documents for installation of wood propellers, all available on internet, when reinstalling your propeller and hub and for periodic maintenance requirements. The cracks in your front plate may be fatigue cracks from cyclic loading of the plate due to improper/uneven bolt torques. Also, consider having your hub tested for internal cracks which may not be visible on the hub surfaces.

Jiri,
In lieu of finding the original material for your propeller plate, McMaster Carr Company, in the US, has certified 4130 alloy steel plate, in suitable dimensions, of Rockwell hardness B85, very close to B88 you specified. The 4130 plate can be heat treated to C60.  Also, check out "making an aircraft propeller hub" on YouTube. Good machining information and also a material suggestion which makes sense considering the application for an aircraft propeller clamping, pressure(friction) plate.

 Hi everyone,

I've just found a cracks on the front prop hub plate on my Ranger powered UC 61K. We are able to manufacture new one. Could somebody send me a type of material and heat treatment required? (we found that HRD is 88, which is pretty ordinary steel)

Thanks very much indeed,

'Jeri,
Along with the applicable Sensenich documents for wood propellers on the internet, was a very enlightening story by a Stearman owner/operator from the Stearman Restorers Association about his wood propeller/hub experience. Good, educational reading for Stearman operators and others flying Sensenich wood propellers
Glad you had the hub tested for cracks. Take good of it as they are getting difficult to replace.

Jiri Horak
