Fairchild 24 Weight next balance datum

Post by xbow59 »

Good morning,
The TCDS lists the weight and balance datum as the wing leading edge. Does anyone happen to know precisely where on the leading edge the plumb bob is to be located?

Thanks!'

'Very good question. When all the TCDS has to say is:
"Specifications Pertinent to All Models Datum Wing leading edge Leveling means Average level indication taken at the outermost left or rig"

It normally means hang the string over the leading edge at the wings most forward leading edge area. Tape the string to the top of the wing a foot or so aft of the leading edge.
Since the 24 has the reduced cord root I would hang two plumb bobs. One in the middle of the root area and the other in the first 10" of the most forward leading edge. Then level the airplane longitudinally and lateraly with a level at the rear floor as published in the TCDS or follow the instructions in the Erection & Maint Manual 01-115CA-2 page 10 Par. D.
Then hang a plumb bob at the center of the prop hub. Now which wing plumb bob is closest to the prop's Station measurement found in the prop section of the data sheet under your model 24. Ie: Wood prop 24R9 & 24R40 = 63", 24R46 = -74", 24W-9 = 52", etc.

'Simply going on memory, I recall the manual saying that the plumb line intercepted the main axle shaft.   Note the info is in the manual.
