'I am hoping someone can offer some advise on my expander tube brakes...no w are not going to convert to Cleveland...at least not yet.
Completely flushed system, replaced both expander tubes with NOS tubes, really old but seemed pliable enough. Installed new brake blocks. Had white post restorations rebuild the master cylinders. Now the problem....very weak brakes , right side worse then left ..how much do the tubes expand with one compression of the master cylinder. What is the clearance supposed to be between the brake blocks and the drum? They act like there is too much clearance or the tube not expanding enough. The book say no adjustment. An old mechanic told me he has heard of folks using shim stock between the tube and brake block...anybody have experience doing this?
Any help would be appreciated, this old bird wants to fly!

'We did not bleed them in a 2 point attitude, but we did as the book said , pressurized the system to about 5 psi, pushed the brake pedal down, then open the bleeder. Got loads of air the first time , a little less the second time and very little the third time, none the 4th or 5th time and have some brake. But just very weak , worse on the right then the left so this is why I was asking about clearances and how much the brake blockers will push out.
This guy also recommended taking the wheel off, putting a clamp around the brake blocks so they can’t move , then checking brake pedal travel. He said I should have pretty much a full pedal or the expander tube was pooching out the side. I did take the brake fluid line off right before the banjo fitting and plugged it, the checked to see how much pedal movement I had...which was none, pedal was hard as a rock which tells me my master cylinders are working.
Jamie, do you know what the clearances should be? Have you any experience shimming the blocks?

' I don't know about the shim between the expander tube and the pad, but I have seen a different setup that didn't have the spring retainer clips. They put a small amount of something that looked like Goodyear Pliobond, Plyibond Rubber, or something like that to hold the pad to the tube. With what the did a long time ago with the rubber cement, I could understand doing the same thing with a shim wouldn't be far fetched.I put new pads on the brake assembly, then put it on a lathe and turned it down to something near the required tolerance. Figuring the first time that I used the brakes, it would knock the fuss off. Then they would be near the prescribed tolerance. On my 24, I bleed the brakes with the tail elevated about 3-4 feet, so the air would bleed back into the reservoir. I don't know about 19s.Bob

I am hoping someone can offer some advise on my expander tube brakes...no w are not going to convert to Cleveland...at least not yet.
Completely flushed system, replaced both expander tubes with NOS tubes, really old but seemed pliable enough. Installed new brake blocks. Had white post restorations rebuild the master cylinders. Now the problem....very weak brakes , right side worse then left ..how much do the tubes expand with one compression of the master cylinder. What is the clearance supposed to be between the brake blocks and the drum? They act like there is too much clearance or the tube not expanding enough. The book say no adjustment. An old mechanic told me he has heard of folks using shim stock between the tube and brake block...anybody have experience doing this?
Any help would be appreciated, this old bird wants to fly!

'I believe the clearance is 0.005-0.010-in and too much clearance will definitely cause your symptoms. I bought new brake pucks and had the assembly turned on an brake lathe to the proper clearance.

'Don't be mislead by the picture on the Hayes manual cover, the content is about the expander tube type of Hayes brake.
When I first got mine going I used thin aluminum shims to minimize the gap between blocks and drum. That lasted several years, but when it can time to redo the adjustment I went the Cleveland brake conversion route.
The Hayes installation looks better, but the Clevelands work better.
