Your description of the seal assembly sounds like the original piece. Look at the diagram in the parts manual. There are 4 flat head screws holding the metal piece in the top of the strut. The seal is fastened to that with 4 rivets if I remember correctly. The metal piece is a firm fit into the top of the strut tube. No threads! The seals are hard to find now. Bill Trombley in Wisconsin makes a really nice replacement. I have them in my gear and they work terrific. The old original ones don't hold up very well. Bill's PH is 414-313-5542.
If you need new main gear springs, Steve Dennis has them. He is in Rice Lake, WI. See his ad in the Fairchild FLYER on page 7 under PARTS.

'Thank you for the strut info Mike. I'll give Bill Trombley a call and get the improved seals before I start pulling things apart.
I also received the photos you sent to my email address. The top piece on my strut differs from both your improved one, and the original one in your photo, as it has a smooth top surface showing. No way to access any nuts that might be involved in holding the top piece in place. It must just be a really tight fit holding it in place, with the 4 screws hold it in place. A bit of a puzzle so far. Wish I had taken a photo of that top piece when I had it out several months ago.
