Shipping

Post by pittss1_s »

'I finally received my new hangar after being on the waiting list for 18 years and I now need to transport my F24 project across town.  The fuselage is still on the gear with the tail feathers attached.  Does anyone know what it will take to transport the plane?  Will I have to take the gear and horizontal stab off? I assume I will but hoping there are better solutions.

Also, any estimates on cost?

Thanks!

'Whereabouts?

My recommendation would be to call various towing companies, and discuss transporting it on a "rollback" tow truck. Ask a few mechanic shops, for their recommendations of the most competent and professional local tow companies.

Feel free to ask for more info. As you may have guessed, I own a towing company in Western Va, as well as being an A&P and pilot & Cub Owner. [??]

'WK,

If you are going across town. A lowboy with 2” x 8” x 12’ outriggers will work fine. Or you can tow it across town. Just go slow to avoid heating up the wheel bearings. Secure the tail to the truck tailgate or bed.

Either way, take off the Tail group. See attached pics.

'The total distance is 45 miles, in the Phoenix area.

I'm wary about towing it from the tail-wheel, because of going that far will take forever at slow speeds and although I haven't measured the gear yet, I think it exceeds 8' 6", which is the towing limit in AZ.

Hopefully I can get this done and not pay through the nose.

'I put PT on a trailer on its gear for transport and definitely exceeded the wide load limit.  We widened the trailer with 2x6s and it worked great.  Also moved a set of floats across 3 states with a wide load.  Buy yourself a wide load sign and hang it proudly.

'Sorry, I didn't read your first comment about the outriggers.  I'll look into that, but to be honest, I'll need to rent both a truck and trailer so I may be stuck having someone else do it for me anyway.'

I just posted an album on moving my PT-23. For the main gear, I lagged 4x4 posts one to another till I had the width needed to fit. Bolted the assembly to the trailer. dropped the plane on it, then screwed down some pieces of 4x4 cut corner to corner length wise for chocks. Ran my tiedowns over the axles and was ready to roll.....more or less. LOL!
This link may take you to it....

'If the wings are off lash the tailwheel to the rear of a pick up truck and choose a quiet time on the local roads and tow it yourself - perhaps touch base with the local police. That's what I would do in UK and have done in the past. Maybe not so simple in the US?
