Folks,
Just about to mount the wings in skeletal form to make all adjustments before covering - however have noticed that the clevis's at the upper end of the lift struts are not symmetrical. The only drawing that shows them installed is in the parts manual and that is not very clear.
Could somebody say if the hole where the struts attach to the clevis is more in line with with the front or rear face of the relevant spar - in other words - which way round are these clevis's mounted on their struts.
Thank You All
Frank

'I put my wing on with in the last year of so, and I found that I had to loosen up the bolts at the upper strut ends in order to get everything to come together. I guess that there was a fraction of a degree shift in the piece that is mounted to the fork end of the struts, so they wouldn't allow the thru bolts to go through the attach points. The front wasn't much of a problem, but the upper end of the rear strut had issues. You will need the rear strut Cleavis loose eventually, to rig the wings. Here is two tricks that I learned. 1st Before you cover the wings, get some small diameter plastic or copper pipe 3/8" slip it over each of the two flap cables. You will need to know the exit point at the wing root for each cable. It will keep the cables straight so when you are rib stitching, you aren't wrapping the rib stitch around the cables.2nd When it come times to rig the wings. I used a "dry wall T square" and a plumb bob. Since you are only matching the lift strut area to the wing root angle, you can get really close.I put the attach point for the plumb line about 7" out on the short arm and noted where the line crossed the long scale. Then adjusted the rear strut to match that number. I drew it up on a computer and found the +/- 1/4", you are really close. Something within 0.1 degrees. A digital level may get you that close.Good luck.Bob

Re: F24 Lift strut clevis's - install which way?
'Thank you Bob – A great tip for the flap cables – when I stripped the wing for restoration I discovered just what you mentioned and the cable had not only chafed through a rib lace but was well on the way to sawing through a rib diagonal where it had been miss routed. I am intending to use a ‘smart level’ to check the wing incidence. And as you say – I had to loosen everything up around the rear strut upper attachment area to get it all together. Can you, by any chance, remember which way round the clevis’s are mounted? Thanks Frank From: fairchildclub@yahoogroups.com [mailto:fairchildclub@yahoogroups.com]

Could somebody say if the hole where the struts attach to the clevis is more in line with with the front or rear face of the relevant spar - in other words - which way round are these clevis's mounted on their struts.
Thank You All

Re: F24 Lift strut clevis's - install which way?
'Off the top of my head, which strut are we talking about? I will go and take a couple photos that could show the clevis clearly. As a guess, the hole on the clevis is to the front of the attach point for the strut. I still haven't put the upper strut cuff back in place. I keep forgetting to paint the machine screw heads. I didn't have to think about it. I never took any of the hardware off. Bob

Thank you Bob – A great tip for the flap cables – when I stripped the wing for restoration I discovered just what you mentioned and the cable had not only chafed through a rib lace but was well on the way to sawing through a rib diagonal where it had been miss routed.

I put my wing on with in the last year of so, and I found that I had to loosen up the bolts at the upper strut ends in order to get everything to come together.

Folks,
Just about to mount the wings in skeletal form to make all adjustments before covering - however have noticed that the clevis's at the upper end of the lift struts are not symmetrical. The only drawing that shows them installed is in the parts manual and that is not very clear.
Could somebody say if the hole where the struts attach to the clevis is more in line with with the front or rear face of the relevant spar - in other words - which way round are these clevis's mounted on their struts.
Thank You All

'Yes, Bob – talking about the front and rear lift struts – Many thanks for volunteering the photos – to my e-mail please as the group photo setup is very long winded.
If you never took the clevis’s off then they must be correct!

Off the top of my head, which strut are we talking about? I will go and take a couple photos that could show the clevis clearly. As a guess, the hole on the clevis is to the front of the attach point for the strut. I still haven't put the upper strut cuff back in place. I keep forgetting to paint the machine screw heads.
I didn't have to think about it. I never took any of the hardware off.
