I'm trying to install PTT switches in the knobs of my joysticks. I want to remove the sticks to drill holes in a couple of places. Loosening the pinch clamps at the root of the sticks does not free them. Do I have to also remove the pivot bolt for the aileron cable clevis? Does that pivot bolt go through the bottom of the stick? The only thing I can think of right now. Thanks in advance for your help.

'I have done exactly what you are setting out to do and have ended up with a neat installation ‘. My sticks are only held in place by the ‘pinch bolts’ and slide out easily - maybe you may have to apply a little persuasion to pry open the ‘clamp’ a little more or perhaps the is some corrosion holding them in – WD40?
If you would like some photos of my installation just let me know.
Good luck

'I forgot to mention that my sticks had slots at the bottom that allowed them to slide past/over the pivot bolt for the aileron cable clevis.

' I didn’t remember having to take the cable bolt out so went to look and they DO have the slots-sorry.

The ones on my 46 don’t have slots so you do have to remove them to get the sticks out so guessing his are the same? I don’t have the boot cowl on so I can take some pictures with my phone and text or email them if that would help.

Re: Removing Joystick - F24
' Frank – I believe it was you (FJC – and different email than your current one) who two and a half years ago sent me some great photos, a sketch and some instructions on your installation. I still have them, fortunately – shows how long I’ve been procrastinating on this little task! Thanks for the info from then, and also the recent info on the stick removal. You used the method of drilling a diagonal hole to get around the knob mounting stud. Somebody else sent a comment that they were able to drill through the center of the stud (3/8-24 stud). Thought I’d try that. I drilled a 1/8 inch hole in a 3/8-24 capscrew to try it out, and it worked fine – plenty of bolt left, and plenty of room for two unshielded, Tefzel-insulated, single-conductor MIL-W-22759/16, 22 gauge wires. By the way, you even sent me a link to Acft. Spruce for the connector you used – thanks. And thanks to you and Buell Powell for the info on the “slotted sticks”. Hope mine are, too. Time to get out the old “Knock ‘er Loose” penetrating oil and give it a try. I have dropped the belly skin of the boot cowl, which gives some access to the bottom of the stick mounting hole in the stick pivot forging. It occurs to me if my sticks have the slots, I should be able to feel them with my skinny fingers, which happened to be crossed right now for good luck! Cheers! I have done exactly what you are setting out to do and have ended up with a neat installation ‘. My sticks are only held in place by the ‘pinch bolts’ and slide out easily - maybe you may have to apply a little persuasion to pry open the ‘clamp’ a little more or perhaps the is some corrosion holding them in – WD40?
If you would like some photos of my installation just let me know.
