PT-19 Goodyear master cylinder problem

Post by Ranchaero Wing Shop »

'I have partly disassembled my deviant master cylinder. Fluid is not
passing through the unit but seems blocked internally. I've removed the
elbow at the inlet port and can see a small hole way at the rear of the
port that should be passing fluid through but isn't. I am guessing that
either there something blocking the piston from retracting all the way
such as the piston stop or seal, or some other mis-positioning
situation. This cylinder is labeled "rebuilt" and is clean, so I don't
suspect gunk. I have the parts manual, but is there any other manual
offering more detailed assembly instructions for this master cylinder?

Also, is there a source for parts for this cylinder?

David

'Hello DaveAre you sure you have the correct piston in your master cylinder.  It may have been replaced with the piston that comes in the NAPA rebuild kit.  You must use the old piston and valve assy for it to work. The old piston is 1-9/16" long.  The NAPA piston is 2-3/16" long and will not work with the M/S used on Fairchild 24's

' Richard,
Thanks for your help. To answer: No, I am not sure I have the correct piston. This MS came with the project and is marked "rebuilt," but I have no way to know what parts were used. This is a PT-19, not a a '24. I can't figure out how to get the back of the unit off to allow removal of the piston. I removed the rotor clip ring but the piston does not come out the back of the unit. I can't see what's preventing it from coming out. The rear of the unit looks like it should thread out the back but I don't know how I would turn it. I gingerly tried pliers with a rag around it but didn't want to ruin it so didn't try very hard. Perhaps there's a special tool for that?

You mention the difference in length of the pistons. That certainly could explain why fluid is not passing through the unit. Once I figure out how to remove the piston, I can check the length. You mentioned this for the '24's. Does this also apply to the PT-19?
