airbox too long!!!???

Post by Ranchaero Wing Shop »

'Dear group,

I have 3 air boxes, 2 that came with the project and 1 that I bought
subsequently, in various conditions. Today I put on the nosebowl and
carb elbow to see how things fit. When I went to add the best airbox,
it's too long! It's about 3" too long to fit between the elbow and nose
bowl. I measured Charles's installation and sure enough, his is about 3"
shorter than mine. Is that possible? Is there an explanation to this? I
am really puzzled! Maybe my air boxes are off another Ranger powered
airplane? Or maybe I have the wrong elbow?

' It's a '43 PT-19, though it was converted from a PT-23 using '19 parts. It has flown as a '19 and one of the airboxes I have was probably used though I can't be sure. I'm really puzzled how these could be too long. Overall length is about 22-23" on these airboxes. I measured Charles' and it was about 19" long overall. These are not precise measurements because it was in place when I measured so there's some error introduced because it's hidden inside the nose bowl.

There's probably some really silly answer to this, and I'm probably going to feel real stupid when I figure it out... haha!

' Hello DavidI have only two air boxes; a PT 19 air box and a 1937 F24 short nose air box.  I measured them and the PT box is about 3 inchs longer than the short nose air box.  Hope that helps some.Rich

' Rich,

Yes, thanks for checking. Actually I think I have it figured out. One of the three I have almost fits but it hits the induction tube so I'll need to try to hammer it in a little to form around the tube. That won't be easy to do gracefully, but I've cut the top off the box because it needs to be replaced, which will make it easier. I have 3 and they're all a little different and really beat up. Wish I could find a good one but it looks like I'm stuck repairing this one. But I think I can make it fit.

' OK. If it doesn't work out, let me know.  I know a fellow back east that likely has air boxes at a reasonable price.Good luck.

' Rich,

If I could find a better one at a reasonable price, I'd sure like to do it! This box needs a lot of work. Can you put me in touch with your source back east?

Thanks,
David
