'It's a PT 17 (Primary Trainer), with a rag and tube fuselage, 2 person tandem trainer powered by a 200 horse power Ranger model 440 engine.  The instructor sat in the back, the student sat in the front.  The wings had wooden spars, wooden ribs covered with 1/8 inch plywood.  By 1944 they were so obsolete you could buy a surplus one for $1500.  They became obsolete because they did not have a constant speed prop or retractable landing gear.  Another issue was you could not park them outside too long because the glue holding them together was made of casein and various fungi like to eat it because it is made from milk.I'm not sure but yours might have been a Canadian plane because it has a cockpit enclosure because of the weather.  In the US the cockpit was open
The engine was made in Farmingdale Long Island.  The fuselage was made in Hagerstown, Maryland and Middletown Ohio by the Aeronca Corporation. 
The Ranger 440 also powered the Fairchild 24 and the Grumman Widgeon.  The Ranger engine is an inverted six cylinder in-line engine making it difficult to work on due to the cam housing beneath the cylinders.One of the reasons for the popularity for the Fairchild with the military at the beginning of WWII was that it used very little strategic materials (aluminum).  The paint scheme is a late '30's primary trainer design.  Later on in the war they left them bare metal.

  No, Ted.  It’s a PT26.  A PT17 is a Stearman with a Continental 220.  You are right about which engine it has.  Maybe others will straighten out the rest of your report.   From: fairchildclub@yahoogroups.com Sent: Thursday, February 25, 2016 7:55 PM To: fairchildclub@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [fairchildclub] Hopes this help with identity     It's a PT 17 (Primary Trainer), with a rag and tube fuselage, 2 person tandem trainer powered by a 200 horse power Ranger model 440 engine.  The instructor sat in the back, the student sat in the front.  The wings had wooden spars, wooden ribs covered with 1/8 inch plywood.  By 1944 they were so obsolete you could buy a surplus one for $1500.  They became obsolete because they did not have a constant speed prop or retractable landing gear.  Another issue was you could not park them outside too long because the glue holding them together was made of casein and various fungi like to eat it because it is made from milk. I'm not sure but yours might have been a Canadian plane because it has a cockpit enclosure because of the weather.  In the US the cockpit was open
The engine was made in Farmingdale Long Island.  The fuselage was made in Hagerstown, Maryland and Middletown Ohio by the Aeronca Corporation. 
The Ranger 440 also powered the Fairchild 24 and the Grumman Widgeon.  The Ranger engine is an inverted six cylinder in-line engine making it difficult to work on due to the cam housing beneath the cylinders. One of the reasons for the popularity for the Fairchild with the military at the beginning of WWII was that it used very little strategic materials (aluminum).  The paint scheme is a late '30's primary trainer design.  Later on in the war they left them bare metal.    I'll write back if I think of something else.  Any other questions?   Ted
