Flap Gap

'We've installed the flaps on our F-24 and there is a gap when the flaps are retracted that ranges from about an inch near the root to about a half inch or less at outer end.  Is this normal?  Will it impact the flight characteristics?  I wasn't expecting clam shell tight.  
The flaps are not original to the wings, and the wings are neither original to the aircraft or a matched pair.  I believe that the flaps are a matched pair. If any of that matters.
One last thing the left side flap when retracted extends beyond the trailing edge by about a 1/4 inch.  Issue or not?
As I always, I appreciate the help and insight.

'Sounds like you have some issues.To answer some questions.  My F-24 is a 1946.  After an accident in 1948, the airplane ended up with a pre-war right wing, and a UC-61 left.  I have completely rebuilt both.  Other than Nav light position, I haven't seen a dimes worth of difference between the them.  The UC-61 has a few pieces that are built heavier.  I have found that the flaps are not necessarily inter-changeable.  The hinges seem to vary in location slightly.  I don't know the history of the flaps, so I can't explain the variations.Try a tight string between the wing mounted hinges and the flap hinges.  Measure top-top-top, bottom-bottom-bottom, front-front-front, & back-back-back.  Use a fine thread that can stand some serious tension.  It may give you a clue about where the problem is.  I used a string to help locate my wing mounted hinges.  The other thing that works is to center bore 2 old AN-4 bolts, put them on each end and see where the taught thread hits the center hinge.Good luckBob

'When you were referring to gaps, was that end gap?  I have the 2 that  were on the airplane when I bought it, and 2 that I bought later in the "70s".   It would only take about 10 minutes.  I have a right wing that is ready for cover, and the left is freshly covered and is waiting for fuel tank install. I can do photos.Bob

'Me again.I took another re-read on your earlier E-mail.  1/2" over almost 8'  doesn't sound too bad.  I think that mine were about 1/4" on the tips and 1/2-3/4" in the middle.  The rear tips of the ribs were bowed up ward.   Of coarse on your flaps, it almost sounds like too many Cessna pilots got out of the airplane and walked to the rear while the flaps were still extended.  As a good guess,  if the flap is flat, not warped, and all of the hinges on the wing & flap are solid, I wouldn't think there is much to worry about.Regarding the trailing end of the wing and the flap sticks out 1/4", it sounds to me like someone changed out the trailing edge and when they replaced it, they seated the new one a 1/4" further forward than they should have.  They also might have had a little dry rot on the rib tips, which allowed it to go on too far.Don't do what I did.  I was all ate up with ambition in 1973, I should fly the old girl around the end of summer.  I reused only 3 pieces of OE wood.

  Sounds like you have some issues.To answer some questions.  My F-24 is a 1946.  After an accident in 1948, the airplane ended up with a pre-war right wing, and a UC-61 left.  I have completely rebuilt both.  Other than Nav light position, I haven't seen a dimes worth of difference between the them.  The UC-61 has a few pieces that are built heavier.  I have found that the flaps are not necessarily inter-changeable.  The hinges seem to vary in location slightly.  I don't know the history of the flaps, so I can't explain the variations.Try a tight string between the wing mounted hinges and the flap hinges.  Measure top-top-top, bottom-bottom-bottom, front-front-front, & back-back-back.  Use a fine thread that can stand some serious tension.  It may give you a clue about where the problem is.  I used a string to help locate my wing mounted hinges.  The other thing that works is to center bore 2 old AN-4 bolts, put them on each end and see where the taught thread hits the center hinge.Good luckBob

   We've installed the flaps on our F-24 and there is a gap when the flaps are retracted that ranges from about an inch near the root to about a half inch or less at outer end.  Is this normal?  Will it impact the flight characteristics?  I wasn't expecting clam shell tight.   The flaps are not original to the wings, and the wings are neither original to the aircraft or a matched pair.  I believe that the flaps are a matched pair. If any of that matters. One last thing the left side flap when retracted extends beyond the trailing edge by about a 1/4 inch.  Issue or not? As I always, I appreciate the help and insight. George

'As you can guess, I don't have professional knowledge on Fairchilds, but I do have intimate knowledge of every nail and gusset in the airplane.  The bad thing is that some of the things that I have done, slight mistakes, are nothing more than re-doing something that some one else did before me.  The worst thing that I did was positioning the aft most former/bulkhead in the top of the fuselage is about 1/2" too far aft and maybe 1/2" lower than it should have been.  Other than that, it looks great.If you need or want some photos.  Glad I could help.Bob (ret)775-482-9243

  Sounds like you have some issues.To answer some questions.  My F-24 is a 1946.  After an accident in 1948, the airplane ended up with a pre-war right wing, and a UC-61 left.  I have completely rebuilt both.  Other than Nav light position, I haven't seen a dimes worth of difference between the them.  The UC-61 has a few pieces that are built heavier.  I have found that the flaps are not necessarily inter-changeable.  The hinges seem to vary in location slightly.  I don't know the history of the flaps, so I can't explain the variations.Try a tight string between the wing mounted hinges and the flap hinges.  Measure top-top-top, bottom-bottom-bottom, front-front-front, & back-back-back.  Use a fine thread that can stand some serious tension.  It may give you a clue about where the problem is.  I used a string to help locate my wing mounted hinges.  The other thing that works is to center bore 2 old AN-4 bolts, put them on each end and see where the taught thread hits the center hinge.Good luckBob

   We've installed the flaps on our F-24 and there is a gap when the flaps are retracted that ranges from about an inch near the root to about a half inch or less at outer end.  Is this normal?  Will it impact the flight characteristics?  I wasn't expecting clam shell tight.   The flaps are not original to the wings, and the wings are neither original to the aircraft or a matched pair.  I believe that the flaps are a matched pair. If any of that matters. One last thing the left side flap when retracted extends beyond the trailing edge by about a 1/4 inch.  Issue or not? As I always, I appreciate the help and insight. George
