F-24 Throttle Cable

Post by tonylowe2 »

'
Can I legally use a MacFarlane A-800 Throttle Control.  How about the big 2-inch round knob?  That's what I see on all F-24's, but A&P's being as they are, always look for the "right" part number and then tell you it doesn't exist.  So how do you get a new throttle cable that resembles the old one?  What have you fellows out there done?'

'When I bought my F24, it had a vernier type throttle. (Ranger powered)There is no way this throttle cable was original or could be argued to be properto the aircraft.
I found it very disconcerting because it do not give me the control I was used to on landing. To be blunt- I hated it. It's all in what you're used to.The previous F24 I owned was Warner powered and had the big old knob throttle, asdid the Cessna 195 I sold to go back to a Fairchild.Aircraft Spruce had a cable the right length and with the knob. It is very well made, of goodquality and works perfectly. But, be aware- it is not STC'd.My research also shows that there is no part # that dictates a proper cable assembly.                                      After talking to my I A, we installed it. My decision- right or wrong. How could any A&P argue originality when the aircraft was certified under CAB rules?Anyway, that's my rationalization.By the way, my landings are about the same, but I feel better.
Cheers,Lonnie

Lonnie,
Thanks for the reply.  Your words seem like they are right out of my own mouth.  My experiences with the vernier throttle and my mechanic are exactly the same, and guys from a local reputable antique/classic restoration shop, as well as older A&P's said exactly the same as you:
1) There is no way this (vernier) throttle cable was original or could be argued to be proper to the aircraft.
2) How could any A&P argue originality when the aircraft was certified under CAB rules?
I have already ordered from AcftSpruce a cable I presume is the same as you have installed.

Best Regards,
Tony

'I can feel you frustration.  When I dismounted the Warner motor many years ago,  I had OE throttle and other things.  All of the OE stuff, forward of the firewall was still in place when I sent it all, motor, off for repair in 2002.  When it came back, none of the linkage was not there.  I still have the throttle forward until just thru the firewall.  I am missing so much stuff for the throttle, Mixture, and the like, I am just going to go with cable.  If you need just the throttle knob and the first piece of linkage, you are welcome to it.Also, I didn't even get my original motor mount back.  The new one have mounts that I didn't know existed.  Has to remove one mount before I could install the oil tank.Bob775-482-9243
