Hi all


I have a 1940 F24W-40
My brake cylinders are leaking bad. They appear to be made by lockheed and are a round tube with a brass plunger, spring, and rubber cup inside. The part that is leaking is the rubber gasket/o ring around the brass plunger. Any clue where I can buy new gaskets?

'Tim,Believe I have the same cylinders in my brake system.  Used some parts from NAPA haudraulic kit #1 to rebuilt them.  Think the cup was one item used.  Also had the cylinders resleeved and bored by a fellow in CA.

'thanx for the response. I did some research and found that exact kit. I got it in the ol girl today and am going to test it tomorrow. I also put new tires and tubes on......WOW that was a pain in the ass!! Not having split wheels make it very tuff to do. Took me about 8 hours.

thanx for the response. I did some research and found that exact kit. I got it in the ol girl today and am going to test it tomorrow. I also put new tires and tubes on......WOW that was a pain in the ass!! Not having split wheels make it very tuff to do. Took me about 8 hours.

'NAPA Kit #1 will do it.  The NAPA bar code is in one of the old E-mails, somewhere.  I don't remember if 100% of the parts that are in the kit will be an exact substitute for all of the internal workings of the master cylinder, but I do remember that all of the rubbers parts work.  If NAPA can't find it, I know that I still have one of the kits. You could also try to do a search of the past E-mails, and find some more information.  I passed the same information to someone many years ago.   There is many shops out there that can reface the wall of the master cylinder.  If you have FE-1990, the wall thickness may not allow resurfacing.  CD Drawing #42281 shows the cast iron master cylinder at the top, and the Wagner Fe-1990 at the bottom.  For the Fe-1990, the one I had, it did have a manufacturers label on it.  The drawing didn't say anything.Bob

'Thanx for the reply. I ended up going to oreily auto parts. I told them i needed a reybestos MK1 rebuild kit. He cross refrenced it to another part # and had two kits in my hand in about 3 hours. I am going to order 2 more just to have in the future. But they are available still

NAPA Kit #1 will do it.  The NAPA bar code is in one of the old E-mails, somewhere.  I don't remember if 100% of the parts that are in the kit will be an exact substitute for all of the internal workings of the master cylinder, but I do remember that all of the rubbers parts work.  If NAPA can't find it, I know that I still have one of the kits. You could also try to do a search of the past E-mails, and find some more information.  I passed the same information to someone many years ago.   There is many shops out there that can reface the wall of the master cylinder.  If you have FE-1990, the wall thickness may not allow resurfacing.  CD Drawing #42281 shows the cast iron master cylinder at the top, and the Wagner Fe-1990 at the bottom.  For the Fe-1990, the one I had, it did have a manufacturers label on it.  The drawing didn't say anything.Bob

'  One thing I ran into was that the Pistons in the new kits were longer than the originals and there wasn't enough travel for the brakes to release. The seals on the new Pistons do work on the old Pistons so you can use them.

Thanx for the reply. I ended up going to oreily auto parts. I told them i needed a reybestos MK1 rebuild kit. He cross refrenced it to another part # and had two kits in my hand in about 3 hours. I am going to order 2 more just to have in the future. But they are available still

'Thanks for the refresher.  I thought that there was something in the NAPA Kit that wouldn't work. How is NC 81330 coming along.I am real close to hanging the motor.  I got most of the dents out of my dish pan.  There was some real tough one on the outer edge.  The reinforcement on the outer edge kept me from doing a great job.  So... out with the Bondo.Getting the bolt to go through the Motor mounts and the mount were a real head ache.   I didn't damage the threads on the bolts much at all.  A little on the first thread was all.Another bit of 1948 damage showed up that I didn't notice.  The rudder "C channel" had been spliced.  Didn't catch that the rear former on the back of the fuselage had been install about 3/4" aft of where it should have been and maybe 1/2" too tall.  It made installing the fairings around the rudder & stabilizer interesting.Bob

  NAPA Kit #1 will do it.  The NAPA bar code is in one of the old E-mails, somewhere.  I don't remember if 100% of the parts that are in the kit will be an exact substitute for all of the internal workings of the master cylinder, but I do remember that all of the rubbers parts work.  If NAPA can't find it, I know that I still have one of the kits. You could also try to do a search of the past E-mails, and find some more information.  I passed the same information to someone many years ago.   There is many shops out there that can reface the wall of the master cylinder.  If you have FE-1990, the wall thickness may not allow resurfacing.  CD Drawing #42281 shows the cast iron master cylinder at the top, and the Wagner Fe-1990 at the bottom.  For the Fe-1990, the one I had, it did have a manufacturers label on it.  The drawing didn't say anything.Bob

'When hammering bolts. Always use a "Bullet" in the holes first to line everything up.  Then tap the bullet out with your new bolt. The bullet gets every aligned. The Bolt just follows resulting very little if any damage.  One makes a bullet from the right sized bolt. Cut off the head. Taper one end to act as a drift. Doesn't have to be very long, just long enough for a gentle taper plus a straight section to bridge any gap between the two parts that need aligning and bolted.
