'Hi AllHappy New Year from Chicago!It's 4 degrees F and we are getting about 10 inches of snow between yesterday and today. Makes it touch to get out to the hangar and work!Our Ranger Build up is progressing nicely! However, I am missing the Carburetor Hot Box Inlet end exhaust tubes. 'Jim,
I believe there's a service bulletin doing away with the tubes because it overheated the intake and they also carboned up. Most I see today are plugged.

Hot Spot Service Bulletin

RANGR AIRCRAFT ENGINE service Bulletin No. 91 October 22, 1943 covers this .It basiclly says to block off the hot spot by removing the tube from the exhaust to the hot spot. Close the little stub of the exhaust pipe. (Weld it shut). Remove the tube going to the hot spot and block the hot spot off with a piece of aluminum and the gasket. I left the other pipe on the hot spot on mine to fill the hole in the bottom cowling. It is blocked off on that side of the hot spot also.
I think the reason they did away with the hot spot tube was becasue the exhaust gases were eating holes in the hot spot casting. The hot spot was supose to help eliminate carb icing I think.
